Sliders & faders
DATA ENTRY slider
This is your main 'turn the value up or down' control while programming sounds. Slide it away from you to raise a number, toward you to lower it. When you're just playing (not editing), this same slider becomes your master volume.
tip: Use the slider to jump close to the value you want fast, then fine-tune the last few steps with the -1/+1 buttons for precision. Remember that during normal play it's your volume — if the sound suddenly gets quiet or loud, check the slider position.

A linear slider on the left of the panel used to set the value of whatever parameter is currently selected in EDIT or FUNCTION mode. Pushing it away from you increases the value; pulling it toward you decreases it. It is ideal for quickly sweeping across parameters with large ranges (like the 0–99 envelope and modulation values). In the PLAY modes it acts as the VOLUME control.
Display & indicators
LCD display
This is the screen that tells you everything — which sound you're on, what you're adjusting, and its value. The single letter at the far left is a quick status clue: it tells you whether you're playing, editing, or in a menu, and warns you when unsaved edits are about to be lost.
tip: Watch that leading letter closely: a small 'p' means your edited sound is NOT saved yet and will vanish if you pick another voice — STORE it first. If the screen is hard to read, adjust the Contrast Control on the back panel.

A liquid-crystal display that shows the current mode, voice number and name, selected parameter and its value, and yes/no prompts. The first character is a mode flag: 'P' for PLAY, 'F' for FUNCTION, 'E' for an unedited voice in EDIT mode, 'e' once editing has begun, 'C' for COMPARE, 'p' warning that an edited voice is unstored, and 'K' when KEY SHIFT is active. In EDIT mode it also shows the operator ON/OFF status (four 1s or 0s), the algorithm number, and the currently selected operator (e.g. 'OP3'). A rear-panel LCD Contrast Control adjusts readability.
Power-ON / Low Battery LED indicator
This little light tells you the DX100 is switched on. If it starts blinking instead of glowing steadily, your batteries are nearly dead and the sound could cut out or get unreliable soon.
tip: If you see it flashing mid-gig, plug in the optional PA-1210 AC adaptor rather than swapping six 'C' batteries — Yamaha recommends the adaptor anyway because it's far more economical.

A single LED located immediately to the right of the LCD on the top panel. It glows steadily when the rear-panel Power switch is turned ON, and flashes to warn when battery power is running low. Dry batteries provide approximately 10 hours of continual use.
Other
Pitch Bend Wheel
Push or pull this wheel to slide the pitch of your notes up or down smoothly, like bending a guitar string. Let go and it snaps back to normal pitch. How far it bends depends on the range you set — up to a whole octave.
tip: Set the range to 12 for dramatic octave dive-bombs, or 2 for realistic guitar-style bends. Combine it with the MODE SET 'Low' setting so a bend only affects the bottom note of a chord for slick bass-slide effects.

A spring-loaded wheel at the upper left that automatically returns to center (normal pitch). Moving it up (away from you) raises pitch; moving it down (toward you) lowers pitch. Its maximum range is set by the FUNCTION mode PITCH BEND RANGE parameter (button 14), from 0 (off) to 12 semitones (one octave). The direction can be reversed by holding the PITCH B MODE button while switching the power ON. Which notes it affects (lowest note, highest note, or all notes) is set by the PITCH B MODE / MODE SET button.
Modulation Wheel
Roll this wheel forward to add wobble to your sound — either a wavering pitch (vibrato) or a pulsing volume/tone (tremolo or wah), depending on how the voice is set up. The further you push, the stronger the effect.
tip: If the wheel does nothing, the voice's modulation sensitivity is set to zero — the wheel can't create an effect out of nothing. Set the PITCH range around 30–50 for a musical, hand-controlled vibrato you can bring in whenever you want.

A wheel at the upper left that applies increasing LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) modulation as you move it away from you. It can add pitch modulation (vibrato), amplitude modulation (tremolo/wah), or both, with depths set by FUNCTION parameters 18 (MODULATION WHEEL RANGE, PITCH) and 19 (MODULATION WHEEL RANGE, AMPLITUDE), each 0–99. For pitch modulation to work, the voice's PITCH MODULATION SENSITIVITY must be above 0; for amplitude, its AMPLITUDE MODULATION SENSITIVITY must be above 0. Its direction reverses along with the Pitch Bend Wheel when PITCH B MODE is held during power-on.
Keyboard (37 mini keys)
This is where you play. The keys are small but cover three octaves. Pressing a key harder or softer makes no difference to the volume or tone when playing the DX100 on its own — loudness is fixed. You can play up to 8 notes together, unless the voice is set to MONO (one note at a time).
tip: Because the built-in keys ignore how hard you play, expressive dynamics have to come from the Mod Wheel, Breath Controller, or an external velocity-sensitive MIDI keyboard driving the DX100. Use the small keyboard itself to quickly set TRANSPOSE and KEY SHIFT targets — just press the key you want.

A 37-note miniature keyboard spanning three octaves. The DX100 itself has no key velocity sensitivity, so playing harder does not change the sound from its own keys — however, its tone generators will respond to velocity data received via MIDI IN according to each operator's KEY VELOCITY setting (0–7). In POLY mode you can play up to 8 notes at once; in MONO mode it plays one note at a time. It is also used to directly enter values for the TRANSPOSE and KEY SET functions by simply pressing a key.

CONTRAST CONTROL (LCD contrast)
This only affects how easy the little screen is to read—it does nothing to the sound. Turn it until the letters and numbers on the display are crisp and dark against the background.
tip: If the screen looks blank or washed out on a bright stage or in dim light, reach around back and tweak this before assuming something's broken.

Switches & toggles
POWER switch
Turns the synth on and off. There's no sound-shaping here—it's just the power. Note that switching it on always resets a couple of things: MEMORY PROTECT turns back ON automatically, so your saved sounds are guarded each time you power up.
tip: Always turn the DX100 ON before switching on your amplifier or speakers, and turn the amp off first when shutting down, to avoid a power-on thump that could damage speakers. To reverse the pitch-bend and mod-wheel direction, hold the PITCH B MODE (MODE SET) button while flicking this switch on.

Jacks & connectors
DC IN jack
This is where you plug in the wall-power adaptor so you don't burn through batteries. It has no effect on the sound; it just keeps the synth running.
tip: Yamaha recommends using the PA-1210 adaptor over batteries whenever possible because it's far more economical—the batteries only last about 10 hours of continuous use. Make sure the adaptor matches your local wall voltage.

OUTPUT jack
This is the one jack that carries the actual sound out of the synth. The DX100 only has a single mono output, so everything it plays comes out here as one channel.
tip: Run this into one channel of a mixer or a keyboard amp. Since it's mono, if you want a stereo image you'll need to add external effects like reverb or chorus after this output.

PHONES jack
Plug headphones in here to play silently without an amp. Even with stereo headphones the sound comes through in mono, since the DX100 only makes a single-channel signal.
tip: Use the top-panel VOLUME slider to set your headphone level—there's no separate headphone volume knob.

A jack that accepts any standard pair of stereo headphones. The signal is sent to the headphones in mono, and headphone loudness is set by the top-panel VOLUME control.
FOOT SW jack
This is where you plug in a sustain-type foot pedal so you can hold or glide notes with your foot. Set to sustain, holding the pedal keeps notes ringing after you lift your fingers; set to portamento, pressing it turns the note-to-note pitch glide on or off.
tip: In SUSTAIN mode the pedal holds notes for as long as the voice's D2R decay allows; if D2R is set to 0 the note stays at its D1L level until you release the pedal, giving true organ-style sustain.

The rear-panel footswitch jack, labelled FOOT SW, which accepts a Yamaha FC-4 or FC-5 footswitch. Whether it acts as a SUSTAIN or PORTAMENTO pedal is chosen with FUNCTION parameter 17 (FOOT SW ASSIGN).
BC-1 Breath Controller mini-jack
Plug the breath controller in here and hold its mouthpiece in your mouth like a wind instrument. Blowing into it adds expression—it can add vibrato-style wobble, tremolo, direct volume swells, brightness changes or pitch bends, depending on how you set the breath parameters. It makes brass and wind sounds feel much more alive and playable.
tip: For realistic wind-instrument tonguing, route breath to EG bias (parameter 23) so blowing harder makes notes louder and brighter. Combine breath parameters for more complex, expressive control.

A mini-jack on the rear panel for Yamaha's optional BC-1 Breath Controller, a mouthpiece you blow into. Blowing harder or softer sends control data that the four BREATH RANGE function parameters (20 pitch, 21 amplitude, 22 pitch bias, 23 EG bias) route to pitch, level or timbre.
MIDI THRU terminal
This makes no sound by itself and changes nothing about the DX100's tone. It's just a copy of whatever performance data is coming into the synth, sent back out so you can hand it off to another instrument. If a sequencer or computer is playing the DX100, THRU lets that same stream reach a drum machine or another sound module further down the line, so several devices can all follow the same signal.
tip: Use THRU to daisy-chain a third device without an extra splitter: computer's OUT into the DX100's IN, then the DX100's THRU into the next module. Keep chains short, as passing through many boxes can eventually cause timing sloppiness.

A 5-pin DIN socket that re-transmits, unchanged, whatever MIDI data arrives at the DX100's MIDI IN terminal. It passes the incoming data straight through so it can be sent on to additional MIDI equipment.
MIDI OUT terminal
This is how the DX100 tells other gear what you're doing on its keyboard. Playing a note here doesn't make the DX100 louder or different; instead it sends the note out so another synth or a sequencer can respond or record it. It can also send out your whole set of edited voices so you can back them up to a computer.
tip: To back up all your sounds via MIDI: turn MIDI on, press SYS INFO twice to reach 'Midi Transmit?' and answer YES — the DX100 dumps INTERNAL voices 1–24. Voices 25–32 come out as blank INIT VOICE data, so don't rely on this for those slots.

A 5-pin DIN socket that transmits MIDI data generated by the DX100 itself — key on/off, pitch bend, mode changes, and (when MIDI and SYS INFO are on) voice parameter edits and bulk voice dumps — to external MIDI equipment. Normally connected to the MIDI IN of the receiving device.
MIDI IN terminal
This is the DX100's ear for other gear. Because the DX100's own keys can't sense how hard you play, notes coming in here can carry that 'how hard' information from an outside keyboard — so an operator set for velocity sensitivity will actually change brightness and loudness with your touch, something the DX100 can't do on its own keybed.
tip: Set the receive channel with FUNCTION button 3 (CHANNEL) to match the sending device, or use OMNI mode to accept every channel at once. If nothing plays, check that MIDI (FUNCTION button 2) is ON and CH INFO is set as you expect.

A 5-pin DIN socket that receives MIDI data from external equipment such as a sequencer, computer, or MIDI keyboard. Received data can trigger notes and, since the DX100 has no velocity sensing of its own, supply key-velocity information to its tone generator.
CASSETTE connector
This is the DX100's way of storing your custom sounds before it had memory cards or USB. It records all 24 of your INTERNAL voices onto an audio cassette as a screechy data tone, and reads them back later. It doesn't affect live sound at all — it's purely a backup and restore feature.
tip: Always run VERIFY right after a SAVE to confirm the tape recorded cleanly. Before LOADing, turn MEMORY PROTECT (FUNCTION button 12) OFF, and turn it back ON afterward. You can even load individual DX21 voices this way — the DX100 reads the first 24 of a DX21's 32-voice set.

Battery compartment
This lets the DX100 run without being plugged into the wall, which is why it was popular as a strap-on 'keytar' for playing while moving around a stage. It has no effect on the sound — it just keeps the instrument powered. The Power-ON LED on the top panel flashes to warn you when the batteries are getting low.
tip: Yamaha recommends the PA-1210 adaptor over batteries whenever possible, since it's far more economical. When you do fit batteries, set the removal ribbon under the second cell from the left first, or you'll struggle to get them out later. Note this holds your voices only while powered — save important sounds to cassette.

What it is
A compact 1980s digital FM synthesizer with mini keys, 8-voice polyphony, and a shoulder-strap design for portable playing.
The Yamaha DX100 is a compact, battery-capable digital synthesizer built around Yamaha's FM (Frequency Modulation) tone generation — the same technology as the famous DX7, but scaled down to four operators, eight algorithms, and a 37-note mini keyboard. Instead of the oscillators-and-filters approach of analog synths, it creates sound by having pure sine waves modulate each other, producing everything from glassy electric pianos and bells to the punchy, gritty basses (like the preset 'Solid Bass') that made this little keyboard a staple of 1980s pop, house, and techno.
The DX100 holds a lot of sounds for such a small unit: 24 rewritable INTERNAL voices, a 96-voice BANK memory (four banks of 24) for arranging your own sets, and 192 read-only PRESET voices in ROM. It is fully programmable, so you can edit the presets or build new voices from scratch, and it has a cassette interface for backing up your creations and full MIDI for connecting to other gear. Note that everything is digital — there is no resonant filter knob to sweep — so the character of a sound comes from the FM parameters you set rather than a filter.
Because it can run on six 'C' batteries and has a shoulder-strap form factor, the DX100 was designed as a portable performance instrument. Its output is mono only, and it plays up to 8 notes at once (POLY mode) or acts as a single-note lead/bass instrument (MONO mode with portamento).
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Connect the OUTPUT jack on the rear panel to your amp, mixer, or plug headphones into the PHONES jack. If using AC power, plug the optional PA-1210 adaptor into the DC IN jack; otherwise make sure six 'C' batteries are installed in the bottom compartment.
- 02Turn ON the DX100 (POWER switch on the rear panel) BEFORE turning on your amplifier — this avoids a power-on surge through your speakers. The Power-ON LED next to the display should glow and the LCD will show the welcome message.
- 03Press the INTERNAL PLAY button to enter play mode. The display will show a voice number preceded by 'P'.
- 04Press any of the numbered voice buttons (1–24) to select one of the 24 internal voices, then play the keyboard.
- 05Adjust loudness with the DATA ENTRY slider, which acts as the volume control while you are in a play mode. If the LCD is hard to read, adjust the CONTRAST CONTROL on the rear panel.
- 06To hear the built-in factory sounds, press one of the BANK A–D buttons to enter BANK PLAY mode, then use the numbered buttons to audition voices. Hold INTERNAL PLAY and press +1 to reach the SHIFT-mode presets; hold INTERNAL PLAY and press -1 to return to NORMAL.
- 07Try the Pitch Bend and Modulation wheels at the upper left as you play to add expression.
How the sound flows
When you select a voice — from INTERNAL, BANK, or PRESET memory — it is copied into a working area called the VOICE EDIT BUFFER, which is the actual FM tone generator. Sound is generated there by four 'operators' (sine-wave oscillators, each with its own envelope) wired together in one of eight selectable algorithms; some operators act as carriers (what you hear) and some as modulators (which shape the harmonics/timbre). The LFO adds vibrato or tremolo, and real-time controllers — the Pitch Bend Wheel, Modulation Wheel, an optional breath controller, and an optional footswitch — modify pitch, level, and sustain as you play. From there the single tone-generator channel is sent, in mono, to the rear-panel OUTPUT jack (to an amp, mixer, or PA) and simultaneously to the PHONES jack. There is no stereo output and no analog filter stage; tone shaping happens entirely inside the FM engine. MIDI IN/OUT/THRU let the DX100 be played from or play other gear, and the CASSETTE jack streams voice data to and from a tape recorder for storage.
Questions owners actually ask
Where is the volume control?+
There is no dedicated volume knob. While you are in any PLAY mode, the DATA ENTRY slider on the left of the panel functions as the master/headphone volume. (In EDIT and FUNCTION modes that same slider is used to change parameter values instead.)
Why is there only one output — can I get it in stereo?+
The DX100 has a single mono tone-generator channel, so the OUTPUT jack and PHONES jack are mono only. To place it in a stereo mix, run the mono OUTPUT into one channel of a mixer and pan it wherever you like.
I edited a great sound but it vanished when I picked another voice. Why?+
All editing happens in a temporary edit buffer. If you select a new voice before saving, your edit is erased. To keep an edited voice, first turn MEMORY PROTECT off (FUNCTION mode, button 12), then hold the STORE button and press one of the numbered voice buttons to write it into one of the 24 INTERNAL locations. If you lose an edit by accident, RECALL EDIT (FUNCTION, button 6) can recover the last edited voice.
Does it respond to how hard I play?+
The DX100's own keyboard is not velocity-sensitive. However, its FM engine will respond to velocity data received over MIDI from an external controller keyboard — set how much using the KEY VELOCITY parameter (button 12) in EDIT mode.
How many notes can it play at once?+
Up to 8 notes simultaneously in POLY mode. You can also switch a voice to MONO mode (POLY/MONO, button 13), which makes it a single-note instrument and enables portamento (glide) between notes.
How do I get those classic DX100 bass sounds?+
They live in the 192-voice PRESET ROM and the BANK memory. Press a BANK button (A–D) to enter BANK PLAY, and look for voices like 'Solid Bass,' 'Synthe Bass,' and 'Mono Bass' in the NORMAL and SHIFT preset groups. You can then STORE any preset into an INTERNAL slot to keep it handy.
Can I back up my custom voices?+
Yes. Connect a cassette data recorder to the CASSETTE jack (using the supplied cable: red to mic input, white to earphone output, black unused) and use the SAVE/VERIFY function (button 9) to record all 24 internal voices to tape, and LOAD (button 10) or LOAD SINGLE (button 11) to bring them back. Turn MEMORY PROTECT off before loading, and back on afterward.
How do I connect it to my computer or other MIDI gear?+
Use the rear-panel MIDI terminals: MIDI OUT sends the DX100's notes and control data, MIDI IN receives from a sequencer or controller, and MIDI THRU passes incoming data on to further devices. Turn MIDI on and set the channel in FUNCTION mode (buttons 2 and 3).
