Hi-Z Instrument Input
Plug your electric guitar or bass straight in here with a standard guitar cable — no amp needed. The moment you plug in, channel 1 switches to listen to your instrument.
tip: Use a regular guitar (TS) cable, not a balanced (TRS) cable — the troubleshooting guide notes TRS cables won't work here. To go back to a mic on channel 1, you must unplug the guitar.

A 1/4-inch mono (tip-sleeve) high-impedance input for guitar, bass, or other high-impedance instruments. Automatically overrides channel 1's mic and line inputs when a plug is inserted.
Headphone Output
Plug your headphones in here. UA touts this as an unusually loud, clean, detailed headphone amp — good enough to mix on. Set its volume with the big knob after pressing MONITOR to select headphones.
tip: Muting the speakers (pressing the LEVEL knob) does NOT mute the headphones — so you can silence your room speakers and keep listening privately.

LEVEL Knob & Switch
This is the one big dial that does almost everything. Turn it right to make things louder — either how much your mic/instrument is boosted, or how loud your speakers/headphones play. What it's controlling depends on which mode button you pressed last. Push the knob in to mute your speakers, or (in preamp mode) to jump between your two input channels.
tip: Since one knob does double duty, always glance at the display first to confirm whether you're adjusting an input's gain or an output's volume before you turn it — otherwise you might crank the wrong thing.

The single large multi-function encoder. In PREAMP mode it sets the input gain for the currently selected channel. In MONITOR mode it sets the volume of the selected output (speakers or headphones). Pressing it in also serves as a switch: it mutes/unmutes the monitor outputs (when Monitor is selected) or toggles between channels 1 and 2 (in preamp mode). Can also control Unison-enabled preamp plug-ins.

PREAMP Gain & Volume Level Indicator LEDs
The glowing ring of lights around the big knob shows you how high you've turned it. If the ring goes red, it means your speakers are muted.
tip: A red ring is your quick visual reminder that you've muted the monitors — no sound is a feature, not a fault, in that moment.

The ring of LEDs around the LEVEL knob. Shows the relative level of whatever function is active (input gain or output volume). The ring turns RED when Monitor is selected and the outputs are muted.
Channel Selection Indicators (CH1 / CH2)
Tells you which of your two inputs you're about to change. Whichever channel name is lit is the one the knob and buttons will affect.
tip: Always check this before adjusting anything in preamp mode — it's easy to accidentally tweak the wrong channel.

Input Meters
Bar-graph lights that show how strong your incoming sound is. Aim for the meter climbing near the top on the loudest parts, but never lighting the red clip light — that means distortion.
tip: Set levels while performing your loudest passage, then back off a touch so you have headroom for surprises.

Input Source Indicators (MIC / LINE / HI-Z)
Confirms whether the unit is listening to a microphone, a line device, or your guitar. If this doesn't match what you actually plugged in, you'll get no sound or the wrong sound.
tip: If you plug into the front instrument jack and don't hear it, make sure the display shows HI-Z — it should switch automatically.

Monitor Selected Indicator

Stereo Output Meters
Shows how strong the sound leaving the unit is (going to your speakers/computer). If the red clip light lights, something feeding the output is too loud — turn down whatever's sending signal.
tip: These meters read the signal level, not your listening volume — so they can show clipping even if you've turned your speakers down.

Preamp Options Display
A little row of labels (INPUT, filter, +48V, PAD, Ø, LINK) that light up brightly when that option is on, dim when it's off, and go dark when it can't be used with your current input.
tip: A dark (unlit) option isn't broken — it just doesn't apply to what you've plugged in (for example, +48V and PAD go dark on the guitar input).

Thunderbolt 3 Port
The single lifeline to your computer. This one cable carries your audio in both directions AND powers the unit — there's no separate power supply. It must go to a real Thunderbolt 3 port, not just any USB-C socket.
tip: Not all USB-C ports or cables are Thunderbolt 3 — look for the lightning-bolt icon on the port and cable. On a laptop, keep it plugged into wall power so the interface doesn't drain your battery.

Monitor Outputs
Connect your studio speakers here (left and right). This is the sound your room hears. Volume is controlled by the big knob after pressing MONITOR.
tip: Always turn these down before powering up or plugging things in. Balanced (TRS) cables are best for keeping the signal quiet over longer runs.

Mic/Line Inputs 1 & 2
Your two main input sockets. Each hole takes either a microphone cable (the three-pin XLR) or a 1/4-inch cable from something like a keyboard or synth. Just remember to tell the unit which you're using with the INPUT button.
tip: Turn off +48V phantom power before connecting or disconnecting a microphone's XLR cable to avoid damaging your gear.

What it is
A bus-powered desktop audio interface with a Unison mic preamp, Hi-Z input, and onboard UAD-2 DSP for running UAD plug-ins in real time.
The Apollo Solo is a small, all-metal desktop recording box that connects your microphones, guitars, and instruments to your Mac or Windows computer. Think of it as the bridge between the real world (a singer, a guitar) and your recording software. It captures sound at very high quality (up to 24-bit/192 kHz), and it can also play sound back out to your speakers and headphones. It's powered entirely through a single Thunderbolt 3 cable to your computer — there's no separate power adapter and no on/off button.
What makes the Apollo Solo special is that it has a small dedicated processor (UAD-2 DSP) built in. This lets you run Universal Audio's famous 'plug-in' emulations of legendary studio gear — classic compressors like the LA-2A and 1176, Pultec EQs, tube preamps, and guitar amps — in real time, with virtually no delay, while you're recording. So you can hear yourself sing or play through a vintage-sounding channel strip as it's happening, not just after the fact. Its 'Unison' technology takes this a step further, physically reshaping the mic preamp to behave like the classic hardware being emulated.
In plain terms: it's a portable, great-sounding 2-input / 4-output interface that fits in a laptop bag, sounds like a professional studio, and comes with a suite of coveted analog-emulation plug-ins. You control most of it from a companion app called Console on your computer, but the unit itself has a clever set of hardware controls so you can adjust things by hand.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Turn DOWN your speakers and take your headphones off your ears before doing anything — the unit powers on automatically and you don't want a surprise blast.
- 02Connect the Apollo Solo to a genuine Thunderbolt 3 port on your computer using a Thunderbolt 3 cable (look for the little lightning-bolt icon — a plain USB-C cable will NOT work). The unit powers on through this cable; there's no power button.
- 03On your computer, download 'UA Connect' from uaudio.com/downloads/uad, install the UAD software and Console app, restart when asked, then register your unit and claim your free plug-ins on the UA website.
- 04Plug in your gear: a microphone to a rear combo jack (use XLR), or a guitar to the front Hi-Z jack. Connect powered speakers to the rear Monitor Outputs and/or headphones to the front headphone jack.
- 05Press the PREAMP button on top to select the input channel (watch CH1/CH2 light up on the display). Press the small INPUT option button to choose MIC or LINE if using a rear jack (the front instrument jack selects itself automatically).
- 06If using a condenser microphone, press the +48V option button to give it power. Now speak or play and slowly turn up the LEVEL knob until the input meter climbs toward the top but never hits the red 'C' clip light. If it clips even with the knob all the way down, press PAD.
- 07Press the MONITOR button on top to switch the LEVEL knob to volume control. Press it again to toggle between Monitor (speakers) and Headphone. Slowly raise the LEVEL knob until you can hear yourself at a comfortable volume.
- 08Open the Console app to add classic plug-ins (like the LA-2A) to your input for real-time processing, and to route sound to and from your recording software.
How the sound flows
Sound comes IN one of three ways: through the two combo jacks on the rear (each accepts a microphone via XLR or a line-level device via 1/4-inch plug), or through the Hi-Z instrument jack on the front (for guitar/bass). Whichever input you're using feeds into that channel's built-in preamplifier, where the LEVEL knob boosts it to a usable strength. Along the way you can apply preamp options: a low-cut filter, phantom power (for mics), a pad (to tame loud signals), or polarity flip. From the preamp, the signal is converted from analog to digital and sent up the Thunderbolt cable to your computer. Inside the unit's onboard DSP mixer (controlled by the Console app), you can insert UAD plug-ins on the way in — so you monitor and even record through classic gear emulations in real time. Sound comes back OUT after your computer sends it down the same Thunderbolt cable. It's converted back to analog and split to two destinations: the rear Monitor Outputs (to your powered speakers) and the front Headphone jack. The single LEVEL knob on top sets the volume for whichever output you've selected. Because the front instrument jack, rear mic input, and outputs all share that one physical knob, you switch what the knob controls using the PREAMP and MONITOR mode buttons.
Questions owners actually ask
Where's the power button?+
There isn't one. The Apollo Solo powers on automatically when you connect it to your computer with a Thunderbolt 3 cable — that single cable delivers both power and audio. To power it off, disconnect the cable (which is also part of the firmware-update procedure). Because of this, always turn your speakers down and remove headphones before connecting.
Why can't I hear my microphone or guitar?+
Run through a quick checklist: First, is the unit in PREAMP mode and is the correct channel (CH1/CH2) selected? Second, is the input source correct on the display — MIC for an XLR mic, LINE for a 1/4-inch device, HI-Z for a front-panel guitar? Use the INPUT button to switch. Third, is the LEVEL knob (gain) turned up? Fourth, if it's a condenser mic, is +48V on? Finally, remember that plugging anything into the front Hi-Z jack automatically takes over channel 1 — unplug it to use a rear mic there.
My USB-C cable doesn't seem to work — what's wrong?+
Thunderbolt 3 uses the same USB-C-shaped connector, but not every USB-C port or cable is actually Thunderbolt 3. The Apollo Solo requires a genuine Thunderbolt 3 connection. Look for the small lightning-bolt icon on both your computer's port and the cable. A plain USB 3.1 USB-C cable will not power or communicate with the unit, and Thunderbolt 1 or 2 ports won't work even with an adapter.
How do I run those classic LA-2A / 1176 / Neve plug-ins while I record?+
You load them in the companion Console app (or LUNA on Mac), not on the hardware itself. Insert a UAD plug-in on your input channel in Console, and the unit's onboard DSP processes it in real time with virtually no delay — so you hear yourself through the classic gear as you play. For mic-preamp emulations, use Console's dedicated Unison slot, which physically reshapes the preamp to match. You can stack up to five plug-ins per input.
Why do I hear an echo or a thin, hollow doubling of my voice?+
You're probably monitoring your input twice — once through Console's low-latency hardware monitoring, and again through your recording software's software monitoring. Only one should be active. The simplest fix: in your DAW, turn off its input/software monitoring (each DAW calls this something slightly different), and let Console handle live monitoring. Alternatively, mute Console's input channels and let the DAW monitor.
The input meter keeps hitting the red clip light even with the gain all the way down. Now what?+
Your source is too loud for the input. Press the PAD button (option button 'd'), which knocks the microphone signal down by 20 dB — exactly what it's designed for. This is common with loud vocalists close to the mic, close-miked drums, or hot line-level gear. Note the pad is only available on mic inputs, not on line or the Hi-Z instrument input.
How do I mute my speakers without stopping my headphones?+
Press the MONITOR button until the Monitor Selected indicator is lit, then press the LEVEL knob to mute — the LED ring and the Monitor indicator turn red. This silences your room speakers only; the headphone output keeps playing, so you can keep listening privately. Press the knob again to unmute.
Do I need the Console app open all the time for it to work?+
No. The unit's internal mixer and any plug-ins/routing you've set up keep running even when Console is closed, because a background 'UAD Mixer Engine' handles that. You only need Console open when you want to change your monitor mix, add or edit plug-ins, or adjust routing. The separate UAD Meter & Control Panel app (for checking DSP usage and authorizing plug-ins) also doesn't need to be open for normal use.
