What it is
The OP-1 field is a portable all-in-one synthesizer, sampler, and multitrack recorder from teenage engineering.
The OP-1 field is a pocket-sized, battery-powered synthesizer and portable studio made by teenage engineering. Despite being about the size of a large TV remote, it packs an enormous amount into one aluminum body: multiple original synthesizer 'engines' (each with its own distinct sound and personality), a drum machine, a stereo sampler, a four-track tape recorder, seven creative sequencers, a bank of eight effects, an FM radio you can both listen to and broadcast on, and a built-in speaker and microphone. It runs on a rechargeable battery that lasts around 24 hours and stores everything automatically, so you can pick it up and pick up right where you left off.
Sound-wise, the OP-1 field is famous for being playful and characterful rather than clinical. Its synth engines range from lush and digital to gritty and glitchy, and its lo-fi 'tape' recording adds warmth and vibe to whatever you play. It's not designed to imitate other synths — it has its own instantly recognizable voice. People use it for sketching song ideas on the couch, for full self-contained productions, and as a MIDI keyboard or USB audio interface for a bigger studio setup.
The whole workflow is built around four main modes you switch between with dedicated keys: synth (play melodic sounds), drum (play kits), tape (record and layer takes), and mixer (balance and finish your song). You play notes on the low-profile built-in keyboard, tweak sounds with four color-coded knobs that always match colored items on the screen, and record your performances onto virtual tape. It's meant to be explored by ear — tapping and turning things to 'see what happens' is the intended way to learn it.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Flip the power switch on the right-hand side up. The screen shows the logo and firmware version, then lands on the tape screen. (If the battery is low, plug a USB-C cable into the right-side port and a charger or computer first.)
- 02Turn the volume knob on the top-left up to a comfortable level so you can hear the built-in speaker, or plug headphones into the audio-out jack on the right side.
- 03Press the synth key (the key marked with a wavy line). Now the built-in keyboard plays melodic notes.
- 04Play some keys to hear the current sound. Press any of the number keys 1–8 to instantly load different preset sounds and find one you like.
- 05To change the actual synth engine, press and hold shift, then press T1, turn the blue knob to pick an engine from the list, and tap the blue knob (or press T1) to confirm. Play again to hear it.
- 06Tweak the sound: T1 shows the engine, T2 the envelope (attack/decay/etc.), T3 an effect, T4 the LFO. Turn the four colored knobs to change whatever matches their color on screen.
- 07When you like what you're playing, press tape to switch to tape mode, press one of T1–T4 to pick a track, hold the record button and play — then press stop when done.
- 08Use the left/right arrow keys to rewind, press play to hear your take. Layer more parts on other tracks the same way, then press mixer to balance levels and finish the song.
How the sound flows
Sound starts either at the keyboard (in synth or drum mode) or from a playing tape track, or from an external source coming in through the audio-in jack, USB, the built-in mic, or the FM radio. In synth/drum mode a note travels through four stages that make up a 'preset': the engine (T1, which generates the raw tone), the envelope (T2, which shapes how the sound swells and fades), the effect (T3, one stereo effect at a time), and the LFO (T4, which adds movement/modulation). That finished instrument sound is what you hear when you play. When you record, that sound is committed to one of the four stereo tape tracks. All four tape tracks then flow into the mixer, where each track gets its own level and left/right panning. The combined mix passes through the master three-band EQ, then a master effect (applied to the whole mix but only captured during an output mixdown), then the master-out stage where you set overall volume and 'drive' (a loudness/distortion character). From there the signal reaches the built-in speaker and the 3.5 mm audio-out jack (headphones/line), and can also be broadcast over FM. You can view this entire chain any time by pressing shift + mixer to see the 'sound path' screen, which flags a warning if any critical level is turned to zero.
Questions owners actually ask
How do I save my work — is there a save button?+
There's no save button and you don't need one. Data is stored automatically, so when you power off and back on everything is exactly as you left it. To save a specific sound to a preset slot, hold one of the number keys 1–8 for three seconds (it goes to the snapshot folder). To store a whole song, use tape — your four tape tracks are saved as-is, and you can bounce a stereo mixdown via the output screen.
I pressed play but hear nothing — what's wrong?+
First check the physical volume knob on the left side and that you're actually in tape mode with a recorded take. Then press shift + mixer to see the sound path screen: a red warning triangle appears wherever a critical level is set to zero, such as a muted track, a zeroed master, or the drive/EQ. Also confirm the track isn't muted (shift + T1–T4 mutes tracks in the mixer).
How do I record an external instrument or sample a sound?+
Plug the source into the audio-in jack (or use the built-in mic), then press shift + input to open the input screen and choose your source (mic/line, FM radio, USB, or resample). Set the input gain with orange and threshold with gray. To sample, make sure the sampler engine is selected, press input, then hold a key while the sound plays; release, and it's mapped across the keyboard. Trim the start/end with the encoders.
Can I use it as a MIDI keyboard or audio interface with my computer?+
Yes. Connect via USB-C. For MIDI, press shift + COM to open the com screen and press T2 (ctrl) to make it a MIDI controller keyboard, or T1 (midi) to set channels and clock behavior. It's also a USB audio interface (class 1.0) and works as a MIDI device over Bluetooth LE by pressing blue in the com screen. If you hear USB noise, press orange in com to toggle USB charging off.
What's the difference between the tape and the sequencers?+
Tape records actual audio — the finished sound of your performance, baked in. A sequencer records note data instead: it remembers which notes play and when, so you can keep the same pattern going while completely swapping the sound. Synth and drum modes each have their own sequencer memory, and only one of the seven sequencer types plays at a time.
How do I change the synth's actual sound versus just picking a preset?+
Presets 1–8 (or shift + 1–8 to browse) load a complete sound — all four modules T1–T4 at once. If you want to change only the sound-generating engine while keeping your envelope, effect, and LFO, press shift + T1 and pick a new engine with the blue encoder. Remember: shift + a number = whole preset changes; shift + T1 = engine only.
How do I connect it to Pocket Operators or transmit over FM?+
For Pocket Operators/modular, set the tempo screen's sync mode to PO sync (or 1/16 sync via shift + ochre); the output splits into dual mono with the left channel carrying the sync pulse and the right carrying audio. For FM, open the output screen (COM key), choose the radio antenna, press T1 to go live and T2 to pick a clear frequency (fine-tune with ochre). If an OB-4 radio is nearby, press T3 to auto-link its receiving frequency.
How do I update the firmware or factory reset it?+
Both live in 'te boot', the bootloader. Turn the unit off, disconnect USB, then hold the COM key while switching power on. For a firmware update, connect USB-C to a computer, press 1 so it appears as a disk, copy the new firmware file onto it, eject safely, and follow the on-screen prompts. For a factory reset, press 7 and confirm with the orange knob — note this erases all your user data.
