[RATE] knob (LFO)
Controls how fast the wobble/modulation happens — slow for gentle sweeps, fast for vibrato or growl.
tip: Hold [SHIFT] while turning to set LFO Mode (Normal or Fast). Fast mode pushes the wobble to extreme, almost audio-rate speeds for gnarly textures.

Sets the speed (frequency) of the LFO and the RANDOM source. When LFO Sync is off it runs at a free value 0–255; when Sync is on it locks to a note length relative to the tempo.

CHARGE indicator
A little light telling you the battery state — orange while filling up, green when full, red when it's getting low.
tip: Charge the battery once every three months even if unused to keep the lithium-ion cell healthy. The unit auto-powers down within 30 minutes when the battery is critically low.

What it is
A pocket-sized AIRA Compact synthesizer with an SH-101-inspired engine offering up to 4-voice polyphony, sequencer, and effects.
The Roland S-1 is a tiny, battery-powered virtual-analog synthesizer, part of Roland's pocket-sized AIRA Compact family. It recreates the classic Roland SH-101 mono-synth sound but expands it into a four-voice polyphonic instrument with a built-in 64-step sequencer, arpeggiator, effects, and a motion-sensor feature (D-MOTION) that lets you shape the sound by tilting the box in your hands. It's about the size of a chunky paperback and runs off its own rechargeable lithium-ion battery via USB-C.
Sonically it does everything you'd expect from a subtractive analog-style synth: fat basses, buzzy leads, squelchy acid lines, sci-fi zaps, and evolving pads. On top of the standard sawtooth/square/sub/noise oscillator, it adds two modern tricks — OSC DRAW (draw your own waveform step by step) and OSC CHOP (slice up the waveform to add metallic harmonics) — so it can get grittier and weirder than a vintage synth. There's also a Riser control for build-ups, a delay, a reverb, and a chorus.
It's aimed at people who want to make loops and jam without a computer: pick a pattern, twist knobs, record 'motions' (automated knob moves), and chain it to other gear over MIDI or sync. Everything you create is stored in 'patterns' — a bundle of both the sound and the sequence — and there are 64 slots to fill.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Plug headphones (or a cable to your speakers/mixer) into the MIX OUT jack on the top edge, and turn the VOLUME knob down before you start.
- 02Charge or power the unit: connect the included USB-C cable to a computer or a 5V/500mA USB adaptor. Then flip the POWER switch on the rear to On.
- 03Slowly bring up the VOLUME knob on the top edge so you can hear yourself.
- 04Press the [PLAY] (▷) button — one of the 16 factory patterns in bank 1 starts playing so you immediately hear a sound.
- 05Turn the [TEMPO/VALUE] knob to change speed; if the [PATTERN] button is lit, this knob picks a different pattern instead.
- 06To play notes yourself, make sure the [STEP] button is unlit (so the pads act as a keyboard), then tap the keyboard pads. Hold [SHIFT] and press [OCT-]/[OCT+] to change octave.
- 07Grab the two main knobs to hear the synth respond: turn FILTER [FREQ] to open up brightness and ENV [DECAY] to lengthen each note.
- 08When you like a sound, save it: hold [SHIFT] and press pad [16] (WRITE), choose 'Ptn', and press pad [2] (ENTER). Unsaved changes are lost at power-off.
How the sound flows
Sound starts in the OSCILLATOR section, where four sound sources are generated at once — a square/pulse wave, a sawtooth wave, a sub-oscillator (a deep tone one or two octaves below), and a noise generator. You mix the levels of these four with their dedicated knobs; that blend is the raw tone. That mix flows into the FILTER, a low-pass filter that removes high frequencies to make the sound darker or brighter. The FREQ knob sets where the cut happens and RESO adds a resonant peak. The filter can be swept over time by the ENV (envelope) and wobbled by the LFO. From the filter the sound passes to the AMP (amplifier), which controls the volume shape of each note using the ADSR envelope (Attack/Decay/Sustain/Release) or a simple gate. After the amp, the sound hits the EFX section — delay, reverb and chorus — for space and depth. The finished signal leaves through the MIX OUT jack (also your headphone jack) and over USB. The LFO and ENV don't make sound themselves; they're 'modulators' that quietly steer the oscillator, filter and amp. Anything coming into the MIX IN jack is simply mixed in and sent straight to the output alongside the S-1's own sound.
Questions owners actually ask
Why do my sound changes disappear when I turn the S-1 off?+
Patterns only keep edits if you save them. Hold [SHIFT] and press pad [16] (WRITE), choose 'Ptn' (this pattern) or 'ALL' (every pattern), then press pad [2] (ENTER). Any unsaved pattern reverts to its last saved state at power-off. The little dot on the right of the display warns you there are unsaved changes.
My pads play notes but I can't program a beat — what's wrong?+
The pads switch roles. When the [STEP] button is unlit, the white pads act as a musical keyboard. Press [STEP] so it lights up and the white pads become step buttons [1]–[16]. Then press [REC] and tap steps to place notes. Press [STEP] again to go back to keyboard playing.
How do I make a sound from scratch instead of editing a preset?+
Start clean: select an empty pattern from slot 2-01 onward (banks 2–4 are empty), or initialize the current one by holding [SHIFT], pressing pad [15] (MENU), selecting 'init' and pressing pad [2]. Then use [SHIFT]+[HOLD] (manual mode) so the actual knob positions become the sound. Remember to WRITE it when done.
What is D-MOTION and how do I use it?+
D-MOTION lets you change the sound by tilting the whole unit like a game controller. Grip both sides firmly, hold the [D-MOTION] button, and tilt front-to-back (pitch) or side-to-side (roll). Set what each tilt direction controls with [SHIFT]+[D-MOTION] — options include filter frequency, resonance, pitch bend, pan, volume, modulation, and delay/reverb level. If you'd rather not hold the button, set 'd.Lat' to On in the menu so it latches.
What's the difference between a 'motion' and just turning a knob?+
A motion is a recorded knob movement that plays back with your sequence, step by step — like automation. You can record up to eight knob parameters plus pitch bend per pattern. To record one in real time, press [REC] and [PLAY], then turn a knob while it plays. If it says 'FULL', you've hit the eight-parameter limit; clear some with [SHIFT]+pad [12] (CLEAR MOTION).
Can I run it off battery, and how long does it last?+
Yes. It has a built-in lithium-ion battery giving about 4.5 hours of continuous use, and charges in roughly 3 hours from a computer USB port or a 5V/500mA adaptor. Watch the CHARGE light: red means low. Never use a fast-charge adaptor (higher than 5V), as it can damage the unit. Charge it every few months even when idle to protect the battery.
Why is my [NOISE] knob not adding hiss anymore?+
You've probably switched on Riser Mode. When Riser Mode is anything other than OFF (set via menu 'rS.Nd'), the [NOISE] knob controls the Riser/Downer build-up effect instead of the noise level. Set 'rS.Nd' to OFF to get normal noise behavior back, or embrace it: sweep the knob up toward the midpoint for a tension build and past it for the drop.
How do I connect it to my computer or phone?+
Use a USB-C data cable (included) straight into the USB port — it carries both audio and MIDI with no drivers needed (USB Audio Class 2.0). Don't use a hub or a charge-only cable. For an iPhone/iPad with Lightning, boot the S-1 in battery-only mode (hold pad [1] EXIT while powering on) and use an Apple camera adaptor. If connecting to a computer and it behaves oddly, turn AIRA LINK mode OFF in the menu ('A.Lnk').
