LFO Modulation Knob
Sets how much wobble (vibrato) the LFO adds to the pitch. Turn it up for a seasick, wavering pitch; leave it down for steady notes.
tip: A tiny amount adds life to leads and pads; a lot creates dramatic sci-fi wobbles.

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) Knob
Changes the character of the pulse/square wave from hollow and thin to full and buzzy. In LFO mode it controls how strong the automatic morphing is.
tip: The pulse wave must be switched on for this to do anything. A 50% width is a pure square; move away from it for more harmonically complex, reedy tones.

Sub Oscillator Level Knob (SUB)
Adds a deep note one octave down to beef up your sound and make it fatter and heavier, especially for bass.

Noise Level Knob (NOISE)
Mixes in a wind/hiss sound. A little adds breathiness; a lot creates wind, surf, explosions, and percussion effects.

Cutoff Frequency Knob (FREQ)
Thins out the sound by removing bass. Raise it to make things brighter and less boomy; at 0 it fattens the low end instead.
tip: Leave it at 0 for full-bodied organ and bass sounds; raise it to 2 or 3 for thin, tinny, or telephone-like effects.

Sets the cutoff point of the High Pass Filter (settings 0/1/2/3). Higher settings cut more low frequencies; at 0 the lows are actually boosted.
Cutoff Frequency Knob (FREQ)
The single most important tone control on the synth. Turn it up for a bright, open sound; turn it down for a dark, muffled, mellow sound.
tip: Sweep this slider while playing for the classic filter-opening effect. If using ENV modulation, note the interaction: with positive envelope polarity keep this fairly low; with negative polarity keep it fairly high.

Sets the cutoff point of the main Voltage Controlled Filter. Lowering it cuts high harmonics; at the lowest setting the tone approaches a pure sine wave.
Resonance Knob (RES)
Adds a whistling, ringing emphasis at the filter's cutoff point, making the sound more electronic and 'squelchy.' Turned all the way up, the filter starts singing its own note.
tip: Combine high resonance with a slow cutoff sweep for classic squelchy synth sounds. Note: self-oscillation pitch isn't perfectly accurate across the keyboard — factory patches A-31, 58, 82 and B-21, 27, 28, 35, 36, 66, 72, 75, 85 use it as a sound source.

Emphasizes the harmonics right at the cutoff frequency. At maximum, the VCF self-oscillates (produces its own tone). Range 0 to self-oscillation.
ENV Modulation Knob (ENV)
Sets how much the filter automatically opens and closes with each note press. This creates the 'wah' shape at the start of plucky, brassy, and evolving sounds.
tip: This is what gives notes their attack character. Pair it with a short Attack and Decay for a punchy pluck; use it slowly for evolving pads.

Sustain Level Knob (S)
Sets how loud the note stays while you keep holding the key down. High = the note sustains fully like an organ; low or zero = it fades away even while held.

Polarity Switch

Control Signal Selector Switch (ENV/GATE)
Chooses how the volume behaves per note. ENV lets your attack/decay/sustain/release shape the volume smoothly; GATE just switches full volume on while the key is held and off when released.
tip: Use GATE for organ-like instant on/off sounds; use ENV when you want fades, swells, and natural release tails.

Bank/Patch Number Display
The little number screen that tells you which sound is selected. When two dots appear, it means you've tweaked a knob and are now editing.

Power Switch
The on/off switch. Always turn the Juno on before your amplifier.
tip: If it won't work right after being switched off, wait a few seconds and try again. It's normal for the unit to get warm in use.

MIDI Function Selector Switch (I / II / III)

tip: Use I or II with non-Juno keyboards or recorders (they don't understand III's exclusive messages). Use III only when linking two Juno-106s so one perfectly controls the other.

What it is
The Roland Juno-106 is a 6-voice programmable polyphonic analog synthesizer from the mid-1980s known for its warm sound and built-in chorus.
The Roland Juno-106 is a 61-key, six-voice programmable analog polyphonic synthesizer. That means you can hold down up to six notes at once, and every one of them gets its own complete voice circuit (a filter, an amplifier, and an envelope). Its sound comes from a Digitally Controlled Oscillator (DCO), which behaves like a classic analog oscillator but stays perfectly in tune thanks to digital pitch control — a big deal in an era when most analog synths drifted out of tune as they warmed up. The Juno-106 is famous for its warm, lush pads, punchy basses, bright leads, and especially its built-in Chorus effect, which gives even simple sounds a rich, wide, shimmering quality.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Turn both the Juno-106 and your amplifier OFF. Plug the Juno's rear-panel Output jack into your amp, then power on the Juno FIRST, then the amp (this order protects your speakers).
- 02Turn the VOLUME knob (top-left controller section) up to about halfway.
- 03Press the MANUAL button (right side of the panel). This tells the synth to make the sound the sliders and switches are physically set to, instead of a stored memory patch — so what you see is what you hear.
- 04Set the Chorus switch to I to instantly get that signature lush Juno sound.
- 05Play some notes. If you hear nothing, check that the VCA LEVEL slider is up, the ENV Sustain (S) slider is up, and the VCF FREQ (cutoff) slider is up above zero.
- 06To hear a factory sound instead, press a Bank Group button, then a Bank number button (1–8), then a Patch number button (1–8). The two-digit display shows your selection.
- 07Experiment: slowly move the VCF FREQ slider while playing to hear the filter open and close — this is the most important control on the instrument.
How the sound flows
Sound starts in the DCO (the oscillator), where you choose the raw waveform — sawtooth, square/pulse, plus a sub-oscillator one octave down and a noise generator. That raw sound then passes through the HPF (High Pass Filter), which thins out the low end if you want. Next it hits the VCF (the main filter, or Voltage Controlled Filter), which shapes the brightness and character — this is the tone-sculpting heart of the synth. From there it reaches the VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier), which controls the volume over time. The ENV (envelope generator) and LFO (low frequency oscillator) are 'helpers' that don't make sound themselves but move the filter, pitch, and volume automatically to create shape and movement. Finally the signal runs through the Chorus effect and out to the rear-panel output jacks.
Questions owners actually ask
I moved a knob and now the sound is different from the stored patch — did I ruin it?+
No. The Juno-106 goes into Edit mode as soon as you touch a control, shown by two dots lighting in the display. This only affects the live sound, not the stored patch. Select any patch again (even the same one) and the original, unchanged sound returns. Your edits are only saved if you deliberately use the Write button with Memory Protect off.
How do I save a sound I've created?+
First set the rear-panel Memory Protect switch to OFF. Then hold down the Write button while pressing a Bank number button and a Patch number button to choose the slot (either order works). The display briefly shows 'Pr,' then the new Bank/Patch numbers, and the save is done. Set Memory Protect back to ON. Note: whatever patch was in that slot is permanently overwritten.
Why is there no sound even though the synth is on?+
Check the most common culprits: the VCA LEVEL slider must be up; the ENV Sustain (S) slider needs to be up (or the note fades away instantly); and the VCF FREQ/cutoff slider must be above zero (a fully closed filter mutes the sound). Also make sure the Volume knob is up. As a warning, if all the ENV/ADSR sliders are at zero you'll only hear a short click.
What is the Chorus and why do people love it so much?+
The built-in Chorus effect adds spaciousness and richness that turns a simple sound into a lush, wide one — it's the signature of the Juno-106. There are two settings: I is lighter and subtler, II is stronger and more obvious. You can only use one at a time (OFF, I, or II). Many players just leave Chorus I on for almost everything.
How do I get that huge, fat single-note bass or lead sound?+
Press the Poly 1 and Poly 2 buttons at the same time. This activates the hidden Solo unison mode, stacking all six voices onto each key you play. Combined with the Sub Oscillator turned up and Chorus on, this produces the biggest, thickest monophonic Juno bass and lead tones.
Can I play in a difficult key using only white-note fingering?+
Yes, using Key Transpose. Hold the Key Transpose button and press any key on the keyboard to set that note as your new 'C.' The whole keyboard shifts (up to ±1 octave), so you can play in any key with familiar fingering. The display shows the new key, with a dot meaning sharp and a minus sign meaning it shifted downward. To reset, hold the button and press Middle C until the display shows 'C' and the light goes out.
My tape backup keeps showing 'Er' (error) — what do I do?+
Carefully repeat the Save/Verify/Load procedure with these tips: use a fresh, high-quality tape shorter than C-60 (C-90 tapes are too thin); don't start recording at the very beginning of the tape — wind past the leader first; press the Verify or Load button before the data begins; clean and demagnetize your recorder's heads; and use the same recorder for saving and loading. If errors persist, try a completely different tape recorder.
How do I connect the Juno-106 to another MIDI keyboard or computer?+
Use the rear MIDI In, Out, and Thru jacks, and set the MIDI Function Selector switch appropriately: position I for notes and hold only, II to also send pitch bend and patch changes, or III to share full tone-parameter data (only useful between two Juno-106s). For non-Juno gear like a sequencer or another brand of keyboard, use I or II — those devices don't understand position III's exclusive messages. The Juno always powers up on MIDI channel 1; change channels by holding the MIDI Channel button and pressing a Bank button (1–8) or Patch button (9–16).
