Volume wheel
Roll it to set how loud HiChord is. But it's secretly the main 'more/less' knob for the whole device — while you're in a menu it adjusts an effect's intensity, and combined with a colored button it becomes a brightness, fade-in, or fade-out control.
tip: Hold the gray button + wheel for attack (how fast notes fade in, 1–2000ms); hold yellow + wheel for release (how long notes ring out, 1–5000ms); hold red + wheel to sweep the filter cutoff (brightness, 20Hz–20kHz) — the filter shortcut works even outside the menu.

Your window into what HiChord is doing — it names the chord you're playing, shows which menu you've opened, and displays the six looper tracks (filled = playing, outline = empty, 'R' = recording).
tip: The looper shows only 2 tracks at a time across 3 pages — the shape tells you the page: circles = tracks 1–2, squares = tracks 3–4, triangles = tracks 5–6. Push the joystick left/right to flip pages.

Built-in microphone
On newer units this tiny mic lets your voice shape the synth (vocoder), tune an instrument, or record a real-world sound you can then play as an instrument across the chord buttons.
tip: For the vocoder, pick a harmonically rich sound like Saw, Square, or FM as the carrier and say vowel shapes ('ahhh', 'oooh') — pure Sine gives the vocoder almost nothing to work with. Mic samples are temporary and vanish at power-off unless you save them to a preset.

Joystick
This is the expressive core. Hold a chord and push it to add or alter notes — up flips major/minor, right adds a smooth 7th, up-right adds a bluesy dominant 7th, down opens things up with a sus4, and so on. Release and the chord snaps back. Push it in like a button to open and drive the looper. In menus it's how you scroll and choose.
tip: Clicking the joystick in a menu randomizes things (in the sounds menu it picks a random waveform; in the key menu it randomizes everything). Change the joystick's whole vocabulary in effects → 'Joystick' (Default → Extended → Chromatic) — in Chromatic mode, pushing left/right with no chord held shifts the entire key up or down a semitone so you can modulate mid-song.

Eight-direction analog joystick that also clicks straight down like a button. While holding a chord it applies one of 28 voicing changes (across Default, Extended, and Chromatic modes); pressed in, it drives the looper; it also navigates every menu and randomizes settings with a click.

Power switch
Slide it one way to turn HiChord on (the screen lights up and shows your key), slide it back to turn it off. That's it — no hold-to-power sequence.
tip: If HiChord won't power on, plug in USB-C and wait a few minutes before flipping the switch — at very low battery it goes into a deep sleep to protect the cell. To power-cycle a frozen unit, slide off, wait 3 seconds, slide back on.

Jacks & connectors
3.5mm headphone / line out jack
Plug in headphones here to hear the full stereo sound (much richer than the mono speaker). It also feeds external speakers, a mixer, or pro gear with the right adapter. Plugging anything in automatically mutes the built-in speaker.
tip: When you run USB MIDI to a computer, no audio travels over USB — use this jack to actually hear HiChord's own sound. Use a 3.5mm-to-1/4 inch adapter to connect to guitar amps or studio mixers.

Standard 3.5mm stereo output for headphones, aux cables, or 3.5mm-to-1/4 inch adapters. On Batch 4+ units this port also carries TRS MIDI (Type A) output when MIDI is enabled.
USB-C port
This one port does three jobs: it charges HiChord (about 2 hours for a full charge, and you can play while charging), it sends your sound into recording software as audio, and it sends your notes to software instruments as MIDI. No drivers needed — it shows up as 'HiChord'.
tip: You choose between audio and MIDI in the effects menu under 'USB Mode' — the device briefly disconnects and reconnects when you switch. For iPhone/iPad use a Camera Adapter (Lightning) or a direct cable (USB-C models); Android needs USB OTG support.

The little speaker that lets you play HiChord with nothing plugged in — great for practice and quick ideas. It's mono, so for the full wide stereo sound use headphones.
tip: You can manually turn the speaker off in the effects menu ('Speaker') to save battery or avoid feedback near a mic, but it resets to ON every time you power up.

What it is
The HiChord is a pocket-sized chord machine, synthesizer, drum machine, and looper for quick musical idea creation.
The HiChord is a pocket-sized chord synthesizer built around one radical idea: you can't play a wrong note. It has seven numbered buttons that each play a full chord, and because those chords all come from the same musical 'family' (a key), any combination you press sounds good together. Add a directional joystick that reshapes chords on the fly, three colored menu buttons that control your key, sound, and playing style, a volume wheel, a built-in speaker, and a small OLED screen — and you have a complete songwriting instrument that fits in your hand. It runs on a rechargeable battery and charges over USB-C.
Sonically, HiChord covers a huge range for its size. There are 30+ instrument sounds drawn from four synthesis engines — classic analog waveforms, FM (the metallic bell and electric-piano sounds made famous by the Yamaha DX7), sampled real instruments like piano and strings, and hybrid noise-based textures. On top of any sound you can stack reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, tremolo, vibrato, filter, glide and more. It can sound like a warm Rhodes, a cinematic string pad, a bluesy organ, a plucky harp, or an ambient wash.
Beyond just playing chords, HiChord is a self-contained looping workstation. You can record a chord progression, then layer up to six tracks of different instruments on top to build a whole song — no computer required. It also has arpeggiators, strum and lead modes, drum kits and pre-made beats, a step sequencer, a chord-training game, and a tuner. When you do want a computer, it sends both USB audio and USB MIDI to any DAW. Newer 'Batch 4+' units add a microphone for vocoder effects, mic sampling, and tuning.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Slide the red power switch on the top edge to turn HiChord on. The OLED screen lights up and shows your current key (it starts in the key of C).
- 02Plug headphones or an aux cable into the 3.5mm jack on the top edge for full stereo sound, or just use the built-in speaker on the left panel.
- 03Roll the volume wheel up to a comfortable level.
- 04Press any of the seven numbered chord buttons. It plays a full chord and the screen shows its name (like 'C', 'Dm', or 'G'). Try pressing 1, then 5, then 6, then 4 — that's the most popular chord progression in pop music.
- 05Hold a chord button down and push the joystick in a direction to change the chord's flavor (up flips major/minor, right adds a jazzy 7th, etc.). Let go and the chord returns to normal.
- 06Press the yellow button to open the Sound menu, then press it again or push the joystick left/right to try different instruments.
- 07Press the red button to change how the buttons behave (Play, Strum, Lead, Arp, Drums, and more).
- 08To make a song, click the joystick straight down to open the looper, click again to start recording after the count-in, play your chords, then click to stop — your loop repeats forever. Switch to another sound and record again to layer up to 6 tracks.
How the sound flows
Everything starts at the seven chord buttons. When you press one, the 'chord logic' works out which notes to play in your current key, and the joystick (if you're pushing it) modifies those notes. Those notes are handed to 12 oscillators arranged as 6 stereo pairs — one voice for the root, one for the third, the fifth, a bass note, an extension note, and a fill, each with a slightly detuned twin panned to the opposite side for width. Each note then passes through its ADSR volume envelope (which shapes how it fades in and rings out), an optional bass oscillator, then a filter (brightness control), and then the effects in a fixed order: chorus, flanger, delay, and reverb. After effects, the signal reaches the looper, where it can be recorded and layered, and finally goes to the output — the built-in mono speaker, the 3.5mm stereo headphone/line jack, or USB audio to a computer. Plugging in headphones automatically mutes the speaker.
Questions owners actually ask
How do I record a full song with layers?+
Click the joystick straight down to open the looper — the screen shows WAITING. Use left/right to set the length in bars (0 = free, stop whenever; 1–8 = fixed length). Click again; in bar mode you'll hear a 4-beat count-in, then play your chords. Click to stop and the loop plays back forever. Now change your sound (press yellow) or mode, click the joystick to record again, and the new part auto-syncs to the first. Keep going for up to 6 tracks, roughly 20 seconds each. There's no overdub or undo — each track is a separate layer, and you can mix, mute, or solo them in Mixer mode.
Why do all seven buttons always sound good together?+
The seven buttons are mapped to the seven chords that naturally belong to your current key — the 'diatonic' set that underlies almost all Western music. In C that's C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, and Bdim. Because they're all drawn from the same family of notes, any order sounds musical, so it's genuinely impossible to play a wrong chord. Changing the key or scale just shifts that whole family; the buttons keep their same relationships.
What does pushing the joystick actually do to a chord?+
While you hold a chord button, each joystick direction alters the notes inside that chord and it snaps back when you let go. In the default mode: up flips major/minor, up-right adds a bluesy dominant 7th, right adds a jazzy major/minor 7th, down-right adds a colorful 9th, down opens it up as a sus4, down-left adds a sweet 6th (or sus2 on minor chords), left makes it darker/diminished, and up-left creates a dreamy augmented sound. Switch the joystick to Extended or Chromatic mode (in effects) for richer jazz and altered chords — 28 voicings in total.
My chord buttons feel unresponsive or trigger the wrong chord — how do I fix it?+
On Batch 1–3 units the buttons are analog and can be recalibrated. Power off, then hold the gray (Key) + yellow (Sound) buttons while powering on until the screen shows ENTERING CALIBRATE. Follow the prompts: press and hold each chord button 1–7 firmly (don't wiggle), then leave the joystick centered when asked and push it fully to each edge in turn. It saves permanently and survives updates. Batch 4+ units use digital buttons and never need calibration.
How do I connect HiChord to my computer or DAW?+
Plug in a USB-C cable — it appears as 'HiChord' with no drivers. For recording its sound, set USB Mode to AUDIO in the effects menu (48kHz stereo). To play software instruments instead, set USB Mode to MIDI and toggle MIDI ON; it sends on Channel 1, up to 12 notes. Note that audio and MIDI can't run at the same time, so switching between them causes a brief reconnect. In MIDI mode no sound comes over USB — use the 3.5mm headphone jack to hear the device itself.
The screen says 'System Full' when I try to add an effect — what's wrong?+
That message means the processor doesn't have enough headroom for that combination of effects, so it's protecting your audio quality. Turn off another effect first. For example, reverb can't run at the same time as delay or flanger. Free one up and the new effect will enable.
How long does the battery last and how do I check it?+
It depends on your batch: roughly 3–4 hours on Batch 1, 4–5 hours on Batch 2, and 8–10 hours on Batch 4+. A full charge takes about 2 hours over any USB-C cable, and you can keep playing while it charges. Press gray + red together to see the battery percentage (Batch 2 and up — Batch 1 has no meter). HiChord also auto-sleeps after 30 seconds of inactivity to save power; press any button to wake it instantly with all settings intact.
What's the difference between saving a preset and the sounds just resetting?+
Some things reset every power-up on purpose — the speaker always turns back ON, and mic samples are lost. To keep a sound you love, save it to one of the 4 preset slots: press yellow + gray together to open the preset menu, use left/right to pick a slot (P1–P4), push up to save, and down to load. Presets store over 100 parameters — sound, effects, key, mode, arp pattern, octave shifts, inversions, chord locks, drum kit, sequencer pattern, and more — and they survive both power cycles and factory resets.
