Knobs
Pre Gain
This is the 'how hard you push the front end' knob for the drive channel. Turning it up sends more signal into the distortion circuit, so more of it means more grit and sustain.
tip: Higher Pre Gain plus higher Saturation equals heavier overdrive; keep Pre Gain low and Saturation low for cleaner Lead-channel tones.

Controls the input volume level of the Lead channel, feeding the Saturation stage.
Saturation
This is the overdrive/distortion amount knob. Low settings give a light, edge-of-breakup crunch; high settings give thick, warm, singing distortion with more sustain, mimicking a cranked tube amp.
tip: Pairs beautifully with Pull Thick (on the High EQ knob) for a fat rock lead voice. Roll it back for bluesy touch-sensitive crunch.

Post Gain
This is the Lead channel's master volume. It sets how loud the drive channel is without changing how much distortion you have.
tip: Set your distortion character first with Pre Gain and Saturation, then use Post Gain last to dial the final loudness.

Normal Gain
This is the volume knob for the clean channel. Important: the Normal channel only becomes active when you plug in a remote footswitch — without one, you're always on the Lead channel.
tip: On the Normal channel, Pull Thick and Post Gain do nothing — the clean channel is deliberately kept simple.

Low
The bass knob — turn it up for more thump and body, down for a tighter, thinner sound.

The midrange knob — turn it up for a punchier, more forward tone that cuts through a band; turn it down for a scooped, hollow sound.

Presence
An extra treble control that works on the very highest, airiest frequencies — even higher than the High knob. Turn it up for cutting sparkle and attack, down to tame harshness or fizz.
tip: Being 'active' it can add real energy up top — a little goes a long way for cutting through a live mix, but too much can get shrill.

An active tone control offering ±12 dB of cut or boost in the extreme high-frequency range. From 0 to +12 boosts, 0 to -12 cuts.
Reverb
Adds spring-reverb ambience — a sense of space, like playing in a larger room. Up for more wash, down (or off) for a dry, direct sound.
tip: The footswitch can switch reverb on/off, but note reverb is defeated (turned off) whenever the footswitch selects the Normal channel.

Master control for the built-in spring reverb (echo effect). Rotate clockwise to increase the effect. On/off can be controlled by the remote footswitch.
Switches & toggles
Pull Bright (on Pre Gain knob)
Pull this knob outward and the sound gets noticeably brighter and more cutting — great for waking up a dull-sounding guitar or helping single notes sing. Push it back in for the normal, darker tone.
tip: Pull it out when your drive tone feels muddy or buried in a band mix; it adds sparkle and presence.

Pull this out for an instant fat, midrange-heavy rock tone that's popular for lead work. When it's out, your Low and Mid knobs stop working. It only functions on the Lead channel.
tip: Use Pull Thick together with Saturation for classic thick rock lead sounds; push it in to get your Low and Mid controls back.

A push/pull switch on the High EQ knob. Pulling it out boosts midrange for a thick rock voice. It defeats (bypasses) the Low and Mid EQ controls, and is itself defeated when the Normal channel is selected.
Jacks & connectors
High Gain Input
This is the main hole you plug your guitar into. It's designed for most regular electric guitars and gives you a healthy, full signal.
tip: Use this input for the vast majority of guitars. It's your default.

Primary 1/4-inch instrument input (Jack A). High impedance, 220k ohms; 6 dB louder (more sensitive) than the Low Gain input.
Low Gain Input
A quieter input for guitars with very powerful pickups (like some active or high-output humbuckers) that would otherwise overload and distort the High Gain input unpleasantly. Also: if you plug into BOTH jacks at once, both behave like Low Gain inputs.
tip: If your hot-pickup guitar sounds fizzy or mushy even at low volume, switch to this jack for a cleaner, more controlled tone.

Ground Switch
A hum-fighting switch. Leave it in the middle. If you hear hum or buzz from the speaker in a particular room or outlet, flip it to the + or - side to find the quietest setting.
tip: If hum persists in every position, don't force it — get the amp checked by a qualified tech rather than assuming the switch is broken.

A three-position rocker switch (positive / center-zero / negative). Should normally sit in the center. Only present/functional on 120-volt models — non-functional on 220/240V models.
Power Switch
The main power switch. Press to On and the red light comes on to tell you the amp is live.
tip: Turn your volume/gain knobs down before powering on or off to avoid pops through the speaker.

Line Cord
The power cord that plugs into the wall. The third (ground) pin is a safety feature.
tip: Never break off or bypass the ground pin — use a properly grounded outlet to reduce both shock hazard and hum.

Preamp Out
A send jack that lets you take your dialed-in preamp tone out to an effects unit, a mixing console, a recorder, or another amp — without disturbing the built-in speaker sound (unless you use it as an effects loop with the Power Amp In).
tip: For an effects loop, run Preamp Out into your effect and its output back into Power Amp In. This won't affect normal amp operation when nothing is plugged into Power Amp In.

1/4-inch output jack that taps the amplified preamp signal before the power amp. Output is approximately 1 volt RMS, relatively low impedance (600 ohms). Use shielded cables.
Power Amp In
An input that skips the amp's own tone circuitry and drives the speaker directly. Plug something in here (like the return of an effects loop or an outboard preamp) and it automatically cuts off the Bandit's own preamp.
tip: Whatever you feed here needs to put out about 1 volt to drive the power amp fully — most effects units and preamps can do this.

Remote Switch Jack
Where you plug in the footswitch. This is what lets you access the Normal (clean) channel at all and switch between clean and dirty with your foot; it can also toggle reverb.
tip: Always push the plug in fully — you should feel a second click — or the switching won't work reliably. Remember the Normal channel is ONLY available when this footswitch is connected.

What it is
A 65-watt RMS solid-state guitar combo amplifier featuring Peavey's Gain Block with pre gain, Saturation, and post gain controls plus built-in reverb.
The Peavey Bandit 65 is a solid-state (transistor) guitar combo amplifier from Peavey's mid-1980s Solo Series, rated at 65 watts into 8 ohms. It was built as a workhorse practice-and-gig amp with two footswitchable channels — a Lead (drive) channel and a Normal (clean) channel — plus built-in spring reverb. Its signature feature is 'Saturation,' Peavey's patented circuit that makes transistors imitate the soft, singing overdrive of a cranked tube amp, so you can get gritty rock and blues tones without a tube amp's weight, price, or fragility.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Turn every knob down (fully counterclockwise) and make sure all the pull knobs are pushed IN before you start.
- 02Plug your guitar into the HIGH GAIN input using a standard instrument cable. If your guitar has very hot/active pickups and sounds distorted or muddy, move it to the LOW GAIN input instead.
- 03Set the GROUND SWITCH (rear, 120V models only) to its center position.
- 04Press the POWER switch to ON — the red pilot light will glow.
- 05For a clean sound, turn up NORMAL GAIN to about 5. (Note: the Normal channel only works when a remote footswitch is plugged in — see the questions below. Without a footswitch you're on the Lead channel.)
- 06For a Lead/driven sound, set PRE GAIN around 5, SATURATION around 5, and POST GAIN around 5, then adjust to taste.
- 07Set LOW, MID, and HIGH EQ all to about 5 to start, then shape from there.
- 08Bring MASTER REVERB up slowly (2–4) for a touch of ambience.
- 09Raise POST GAIN (Lead) or NORMAL GAIN (Normal) to reach your final playing volume — always set overall loudness last, after you like the tone.
How the sound flows
Your guitar plugs into one of two front-panel input jacks (High Gain for normal pickups, Low Gain for very hot pickups). From there the signal hits the preamp. On the Lead channel, the sound passes through Pre Gain (input level), the Saturation control (how much overdrive), then Post Gain (channel volume). On the Normal channel it passes through the single Normal Gain control. Both channels then feed a shared tone stack — Low, Mid, High EQ plus the active Presence control — followed by the spring Reverb. Finally everything reaches the power amplifier and out to the built-in speaker. On the rear, a Preamp Out jack lets you tap the signal before the power amp (for effects loops or recording), and a Power Amp In jack lets you feed a signal straight into the power section, bypassing the preamp.
Questions owners actually ask
Why can't I get a clean channel — everything sounds like the drive channel?+
The Normal (clean) channel only becomes active when you plug the supplied remote footswitch into the Remote Switch Jack on the rear panel. With no footswitch connected, the amp is locked on the Lead channel. Plug in the footswitch (all the way, until the second click) to unlock and select the Normal channel.
Why don't my Low and Mid knobs do anything?+
You almost certainly have Pull Thick engaged (the High EQ knob pulled out). Pull Thick bypasses both the Low and Mid EQ controls to create its fat midrange voice. Push the High EQ knob back in to restore normal Low and Mid tone control. Also note Pull Thick only functions on the Lead channel.
What is 'Saturation' and how is it different from just turning up the volume?+
Saturation is Peavey's patented circuit that makes transistors imitate the soft, warm clipping of an overdriven tube amp. It controls the amount of distortion/grit and sustain in the Lead channel, independent of volume. So you can get a heavily overdriven tone at bedroom volume by keeping Post Gain low and Saturation high.
Should I use the High Gain or Low Gain input?+
Use High Gain for almost all guitars — it's the standard, more sensitive input. Only use Low Gain if you have very hot or active pickups that make the High Gain input sound distorted or muddy even at low settings. If you plug into both jacks at once, both act as Low Gain inputs.
How do I set up an effects loop?+
Run a shielded cable from the rear Preamp Out into your effects unit's input, then from the effect's output back into the Power Amp In jack. Plugging into Power Amp In automatically disconnects the internal preamp, so you hear your tone with the effect in the chain. Your effect needs to accept about 1 volt and put out about 1 volt to work properly.
I'm hearing hum or buzz — how do I fix it?+
On 120-volt models, try the rear Ground Switch. Leave it centered normally, but if you get audible hum in a particular outlet or room, flip it to the + or - position to find the quietest setting. Always plug into a properly grounded outlet and never remove the ground pin from the power cord. If hum continues in every position, have it checked by a qualified technician.
What's the right order to dial in a sound?+
Set your tone first: use Pre Gain and Saturation to shape the drive character on the Lead channel, then adjust Low/Mid/High EQ and Presence for tone. Set overall loudness LAST — use Post Gain for the Lead channel or Normal Gain for the clean channel to reach your final volume after you like the sound.
Can I use this amp just as a power amp for my modeler or preamp?+
Yes. Plug your modeler or outboard preamp's output into the rear Power Amp In jack. This bypasses the Bandit's own preamp entirely and drives the built-in speaker directly. Feed it roughly 1 volt for full output. In this mode the front-panel gain and EQ controls no longer affect your sound.
