CUTOFF
The master brightness/darkness control. Turn down to make sounds muffled and dark; turn up to make them bright and open.
tip: The lower you set CUTOFF, the more room the filter envelope has to sweep it dramatically.

RESONANCE
Adds a whistling emphasis at the cutoff frequency that makes filter sweeps sing. Crank it and the filter becomes its own sound source.
tip: High resonance plus sample-and-hold modulation on the filter creates classic squelchy, bubbling textures.

EG AMOUNT
Decides how much — and in which direction — the filter envelope automatically opens or closes the filter each time you play a note.
tip: Its effect depends on the CUTOFF setting; if cutoff is already maxed, turning EG AMOUNT up does little. Leave headroom in CUTOFF for the envelope to work.

KB AMOUNT
Makes higher notes brighter and lower notes darker, so the filter tracks the pitch you play instead of staying fixed.

What it is
A 25-key monophonic analog synthesizer with two oscillators, a sub oscillator, a resonant ladder filter, and a MultiDrive overdrive circuit for crafting fat Moog bass and lead sounds.
The Moog Sub Phatty is a monophonic (one-note-at-a-time) analog synthesizer built in the classic Moog tradition. It has a 25-note velocity-sensitive keyboard and a front panel packed with knobs and buttons — nearly every function has its own dedicated control. It produces sound using a 100% analog signal path: two very stable oscillators, a square-wave sub oscillator, a pink-noise generator, a legendary Moog ladder low-pass filter, and two envelope generators. Its signature feature is MultiDrive, a distortion/overdrive circuit that can push sounds from warm tube-like grit to aggressive hard clipping.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Turn MASTER VOLUME all the way down. Connect the rear AUDIO OUT jack to an amp or powered speaker with a 1/4-inch cable (or plug headphones into the front headphone jack).
- 02Plug the supplied power cord into the IEC socket on the left-side panel, connect it to a wall outlet, and flip the power switch. Give it up to 60 seconds to warm up and settle in tune if it's been in the cold.
- 03Play the keyboard while slowly turning MASTER VOLUME (or HEADPHONE VOLUME) clockwise until you hear a comfortable level. Note: for headphones, MASTER VOLUME must also be turned up.
- 04Press BANK and PATCH buttons in the PRESETS section to audition the 16 factory sounds — pick one you like.
- 05Press ACTIVATE PANEL to switch to Panel mode, where the physical knob positions make the sound instead of a stored preset. Now you can tweak freely.
- 06To learn the instrument fast, do a Patch Initialization: with Panel active, turn CUTOFF fully up, filter EG AMOUNT to center, all other filter knobs down; both envelope SUSTAIN knobs up and the rest down; both OCTAVE knobs to 16'; all MIXER knobs down. Then turn up OSC 1 in the mixer and start exploring.
- 07When you build a sound you love, save it: hold the BANK button for your target bank, press the PATCH button for your slot, hold both for at least one second, then release.
How the sound flows
Sound starts at the sound sources: Oscillator 1, Oscillator 2, a Sub Oscillator (always one octave below Osc 1), a pink-noise generator, and an external audio input. These five sources are blended together in the MIXER, where each has its own level knob. On the Sub Phatty, turning a mixer level past 6 overdrives the filter, so you choose which sources sound clean and which sound driven. The mixed signal then flows into the ladder low-pass filter, which removes high frequencies above the CUTOFF point and shapes the tone; the filter envelope, the LFO, and keyboard tracking can all sweep the cutoff. Next the signal passes through the MultiDrive distortion stage, then into the voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA), whose loudness over time is shaped by the amplifier envelope. Finally the sound reaches the rear AUDIO OUT jack and the front-panel HEADPHONE output. The LFO and the two envelopes are control signals that steer pitch, filter cutoff, waveform shape, and volume rather than being heard directly.
Questions owners actually ask
How do I save a sound I've made?+
Press and hold the BANK button for your target bank, then press the PATCH button for your target slot, and hold both for at least one second until they flash and go solid. That location's previous preset is overwritten. If you release too early, both buttons keep flashing — you can hold ACTIVATE PANEL to preview what's currently stored there, then either repeat the save or press any BANK button to cancel.
Why is my synth silent even though it's powered on?+
Check several things: MASTER VOLUME (and HEADPHONE VOLUME for headphones) must be up; at least one MIXER source (OSC 1, OSC 2, SUB OSC, or NOISE) must be turned up; the filter CUTOFF must be open (not fully closed at 20Hz); and the amplifier envelope must let sound through (SUSTAIN up, or an attack/decay that opens the volume). If you just ran a Patch Initialization with all mixer knobs down, that's intentionally silent until you turn a source up.
What is Panel mode versus Preset mode?+
Press ACTIVATE PANEL to switch. In Preset mode you hear a stored patch, and the knob positions may not match what you hear. In Panel mode the live positions of every knob and the state of four buttons make the sound, just like an old synth with no memory. Build sounds in Panel mode, then save them to a preset slot.
What does MultiDrive actually do?+
MultiDrive is the Sub Phatty's built-in distortion, sitting between the filter and amplifier. At low settings it adds warm, tube-like grit; higher up it becomes aggressive hard clipping. It also makes your sound more reactive to resonance, waveform, and oscillator-level changes, so it's a key part of the Sub Phatty's aggressive character. A tiny bit adds punch and edge to almost any patch.
How do I reach the hidden ('under the hood') parameters?+
Hold the BANK 4 button and press ACTIVATE PANEL to enter Shift mode (ACTIVATE PANEL blinks). Some parameters are reassigned to knobs — for example, in Shift mode the envelope knobs set delay, hold, and velocity amounts. Others use button codes plus a keyboard key to pick a value: enter a BANK/PATCH code, then press a key (low C is usually OFF/lowest, low C# is ON). Press ACTIVATE PANEL again to exit and return everything to normal.
Can I run my guitar or another instrument through the Moog filter?+
Yes. Connect a line-level source to the rear EXT IN jack. You must open the gate for audio to pass — press a key on the keyboard, use a Moog FS-1 footswitch, or plug any cable into the KB GATE jack. Set the incoming level in Shift mode using the NOISE knob (its Shift function is External Input Level), or use the plug-in editor. The external signal then flows through the filter, MultiDrive, and amplifier.
Why does my synth sound slightly out of tune when I first turn it on?+
It's an analog synthesizer, so give it up to 60 seconds to warm up and stabilize, especially if it's been somewhere cold. The oscillators are very stable once warmed. If tuning drifts across octaves, run the Note Calibration routine in Shift mode (hold BANK 4 + ACTIVATE PANEL to enter Shift, press BANK 3, BANK 4, PATCH 4, then press C# twice).
How do I connect it to my computer and DAW?+
Use a single USB cable from the rear USB port to your computer — this carries MIDI in and out (but not audio). Every knob and button sends MIDI CC, so you can record your movements. For audio, run the rear AUDIO OUT into an audio interface. Download Moog's free editor/librarian plug-in to store unlimited presets and program sounds with an on-screen interface. You can set MIDI channels and USB/DIN routing in Shift mode.
