Individual level knobs
One volume knob per drum — set the balance between kick, snare, hats and so on.
tip: Set these while a pattern loops so you can hear the mix come together in context.

Tune (Bass Drum)
Makes the kick drum higher or lower in pitch — low for a deep boom, high for a tighter thud.

tip: Use the normal button for long decay and the Shift version when you want a short kick regardless of this knob.

What it is
The MFB-522 is a compact analog drum machine from German maker MFB (Manfred Fricke Berlin), offering TR-808-style analog percussion sounds with a built-in step sequencer.
The MFB-522 is a compact analogue drum machine — meaning it generates its nine drum sounds from real electronic circuits rather than playing back recorded samples. This gives it a punchy, gritty, classic drum-machine character in the spirit of the Roland machines it's inspired by. Because the sounds are analogue, you can tweak most of them live using dedicated knobs, so the same beat can shift from tight and dry to boomy and washy just by turning a few controls.
The nine instruments are bass drum, snare, clap, tom/conga, cowbell, cymbal, hi-hat (open and closed), plus hidden 'variation' sounds like rimshot and clave that share circuits with the main sounds. Several sounds have two or three variations available per pattern — for example the bass drum comes in a long and a short version, and the tom/conga gives you low, mid, and high pitches.
Under the hood it's a step sequencer with 72 built-in rhythm patterns, each with a matching fill, plus eight song slots for chaining patterns into full arrangements. It has a swing/shuffle feature, a dedicated accent track for adding emphasis, and it can either run on its own internal clock or lock to an external MIDI clock so it plays in time with other gear.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Connect the included external power supply to the Power jack on the rear.
- 02Run a cable from Stereo Out to your mixer, amplifier, or audio interface. (Leave the four individual outputs unplugged for now so all sounds stay in the main mix.)
- 03Flip the On/Off switch to power up the unit.
- 04Press Play to start the sequencer — it will play whichever rhythm is currently loaded.
- 05Turn the Tempo knob to set the speed you want.
- 06Press and hold Rhythm and tap a white button (1–8) to choose one of the first eight built-in patterns, then listen as it starts on the next bar.
- 07Grab the instrument knobs — try Tune and Decay on the bass drum — and hear the sounds change live.
- 08Press Play again to stop.
How the sound flows
Each of the nine instruments is generated by its own analogue sound circuit. You trigger a sound either by pressing its white button, by the internal sequencer playing a programmed step, or by a note arriving at the MIDI-In jack. Every instrument passes through its own individual level knob, which sets how loud it is. All the instruments are then mixed together and sent to the Stereo Out, which is the main output you connect to a mixer, amp, or audio interface. Bass drum, snare, clap, and hi-hat also have their own individual output jacks on the rear; the moment you plug a cable into one of these, that instrument is automatically pulled out of the Stereo Out mix so you can process or record it separately.
Questions owners actually ask
How do I play the hidden sounds like rimshot, clave, and short kick?+
Hold Shift and press the relevant white button. This gives you the short bass drum (from the kick button), rimshot (from the snare), short clap (from the clap), high tom/conga (from the tom button), and clave (from the cowbell). Note these share circuits with their main sounds, so a snare and rimshot, or cowbell and clave, can't play at the same instant.
How do I program my own beat?+
Stop the sequencer or leave it running, select the pattern you want, and if it already has notes, hold Rec + Rhythm for a second to erase it. Then hold Rec and press an instrument button (e.g. 1/BD), release Rec, and use the eight white buttons to place hits on the odd steps (1, 3, 5…). Hold Shift to switch to the even steps (2, 4, 6…). Repeat for each instrument.
How do I add accents or emphasis to a beat?+
Program the accent track: press Rec + Shift to select it, then set accents on any steps. Accents affect all instruments at once. Press Shift twice while on the accent track to set 'negative' accents that reduce volume instead of boosting it.
Why did one of my drums vanish from the main output?+
You've probably got a cable plugged into one of the four individual output jacks (bass drum, snare, clap, or hi-hat). Plugging into an individual output automatically removes that instrument from the Stereo Out. Unplug it to bring the sound back into the main mix.
How do I get swing/shuffle, and why does it reset?+
Repeatedly press Shift + Play to cycle through Shuffle 1, Shuffle 2, Shuffle 3, and off. Changes take effect at the start of the next bar. The shuffle setting is global, isn't saved with patterns, and always starts off when you power up, so you have to set it again each session.
How do I sync the 522 to my other gear via MIDI?+
Hold Play while switching the unit on to toggle into external synchronization mode. In this mode it responds to incoming MIDI start, stop, and clock messages from the MIDI-In. In internal mode those messages are ignored. The mode isn't displayed anywhere, so you'll need to remember which one you set.
How do I build and play a full song?+
To record, select a song then press Rec. For each pattern, first choose whether to use the basic one-bar rhythm or the version with fill, select the pattern on the white buttons, and press Song to confirm. Repeat for every pattern, then press Rec again to finish and save. To play a song back, press Song plus a white button to pick one of the eight songs, then press Play.
Can I make a pattern shorter than 16 steps?+
Yes. Hold Rec and press buttons 7/OH and 8/HH together, then release Rec. With the sequencer running you can now press any white button to set (or remove) a loop border, shortening the pattern. The border point isn't shown on the LEDs, so you'll judge it by ear.
