What it is
A compact 4-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer with a 16-step polyphonic sequencer and oscilloscope display.
The Korg minilogue is a genuinely analog 4-voice polyphonic synthesizer with a 37-note slim keyboard, an onboard delay effect, and a built-in 16-step sequencer. "Analog" means the sound is generated by real electronic circuits rather than samples or digital modeling, which gives it a warm, slightly living quality — it even drifts in tune with temperature and offers a re-tuning function to correct for that. Being polyphonic means you can hold down chords (up to four notes at once), which sets it apart from many small analog synths that only play one note at a time. It ships with 100 ready-made preset sounds and 100 empty slots for your own creations.
Sound-wise, the minilogue covers the classic analog territory: fat basses, cutting leads, lush pads, evolving textures, and quirky sound effects. It's aimed at anyone who wants to learn synthesis hands-on: nearly every important parameter has its own dedicated knob or switch on the panel, so you tweak sound directly rather than digging through menus. First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Connect the included AC adapter to the DC 9V jack on the rear panel (loop the cable around the cable hook so it can't pull out), then plug it into a wall outlet. Do all cabling with the unit off.
- 02Connect the rear OUTPUT jack to powered speakers or a mixer with a 1/4" cable, or plug headphones into the Headphones jack. Make sure speakers are turned down or off for now.
- 03Turn the MASTER knob (front, top-left) fully left to zero the volume, then hold the rear Power switch until the "minilogue" logo appears in the display and release it.
- 04Turn on your speakers, then slowly raise the MASTER knob and play the keyboard — you should hear preset Program 001.
- 05Turn the PROGRAM/VALUE knob to browse the 100 factory sounds; the display shows each name and number. Hold SHIFT while turning to jump 10 at a time.
- 06Press the PLAY button in the SEQUENCER section to hear the sequence saved with the current Program; press PLAY again to stop.
- 07Start tweaking: turn the FILTER CUTOFF knob to brighten or darken the sound, and adjust the AMP EG ATTACK and RELEASE knobs to change how notes fade in and out. Nothing you touch is permanent until you save.
- 08When you make a sound you like, press WRITE, turn PROGRAM/VALUE to pick a user slot (101–200), and press WRITE again to save it before switching Programs or powering off.
How the sound flows
Sound starts in each voice with two oscillators (VCO 1 and VCO 2) plus a noise generator. Each oscillator produces a basic waveform (square, triangle, or sawtooth) whose character you further sculpt with a SHAPE control. VCO 2 can be modulated by VCO 1 in three ways — oscillator sync, cross modulation, and ring modulation — to create richer or more aggressive tones. These three sources (VCO 1, VCO 2, and noise) are blended together in the MIXER, where you set the relative loudness of each before they hit the filter. The mixed signal then passes through the low-pass FILTER (VCF), which removes higher frequencies above a cutoff point you choose — this is the main tone-shaping stage, making sounds brighter or darker. The filter can be swept over time by an envelope (EG) and influenced by which key you play and how hard. After the filter, the sound reaches the amplifier (VCA), whose volume is shaped over time by the AMP EG envelope (attack, decay, sustain, release) so notes fade in and out naturally. All four voices are then summed together and sent through a high-pass filter and a DELAY (echo) effect, which you can place before or after that filter or bypass entirely. Finally the combined signal reaches the OUTPUT and Headphones jacks, with overall loudness set by the MASTER knob. An LFO (low-frequency oscillator) runs alongside all this, adding cyclic movement to pitch, shape, or filter cutoff for vibrato, tremolo, and wah-type effects.
Questions owners actually ask
Why did my sound disappear/reset when I changed Programs or turned it off?+
The minilogue does not automatically save your tweaks. Any edits to the current Program are lost the moment you select another Program or power down. To keep a sound, press WRITE, turn PROGRAM/VALUE to choose a slot (use 101–200 for your own sounds), and press WRITE again. You'll see 'Complete' when it's saved.
How do I play chords, and why does one preset only play single notes?+
It's fully 4-voice polyphonic, but each Program has a Voice Mode set with buttons 1–8. POLY (button 1) lets you play up to four notes at once. Modes like UNISON, MONO, or CHORD stack the four voices into a single played note, so they'll sound monophonic by design. Press button 1 (POLY) if you want normal chord playing.
The knobs don't seem to change the sound — what's wrong?+
Check GLOBAL EDIT > Knob Mode. If it's set to 'Catch,' the parameter won't move until the knob physically passes the stored value (this prevents sudden jumps). Set it to 'Jump' for immediate response while learning. Also make sure you're in Play mode — press EXIT if an EDIT or sequencer button is lit.
My tuning sounds off after playing for a while. How do I fix it?+
That's normal for analog circuits, especially right after power-on when the internal temperature is still changing. Auto-tuning happens automatically when the synth is silent, but you can force a manual retune anytime by holding SHIFT and pressing REC. It takes about 15 seconds, during which you can't play; the display shows 'Tuning...'.
How do I record my own sequence?+
For live recording: press PLAY, then REC, and play the keyboard to overdub notes; press REC again to stop. For step-by-step entry: with the sequencer stopped, press REC — the display shows 'STEP 1' — then play notes one at a time (each entry advances a step), use REST for silences, or hold REST with a key for ties. You can also automate knob/switch moves ('motion sequences') by moving them while recording.
How do I set up Favorites for fast recall live?+
In Play mode, select a Program you like, then hold SHIFT and hold one of buttons 1–8 until 'Registered to Favorite' appears. To recall it later, just hold SHIFT and tap that button. You get eight Favorite slots, and they're stored in the Global settings, not tied to individual Programs.
How do I connect it to my computer or other MIDI gear?+
For a computer, use a USB cable to the USB B connector and install Korg's USB-MIDI driver from their website. For hardware, use 5-pin MIDI cables (OUT to the other device's IN, and vice versa). Match MIDI channels in GLOBAL EDIT (MIDI Ch), and if you're getting double notes from a sequencer, set Local SW to Off there.
How do I restore the factory sounds if I've overwritten everything?+
Turn the unit off. Then hold WRITE and EXIT together while powering on until 'FACTORY RESET' appears. Turn PROGRAM/VALUE to pick PRESET (factory sounds only), GLOBAL (settings and Favorites), or ALL (everything, which erases your user sounds too). Press WRITE, select 'Yes,' and press WRITE again. Never power off while it's loading.
