RATE
Controls how often the random pitch wobbles happen — from rare and occasional to jittery and nervous. It's a wide range, but because the movement is random it never becomes a steady, predictable pulse.
tip: At high RATE combined with high DAMP, the quick changes can't get through the sluggish filter, so you'll actually hear less modulation — this is normal. RATE and DAMP interact strongly; experiment to tame them together.

Sets the overall range of time intervals between the random voltage steps produced by the pseudo-random generator that modulates the delay time.
DAMP
Controls how smooth or sudden the pitch changes feel. Turned down, the wobbles are quick and abrupt, almost jumpy. Turned up, they stretch out and soften into slow drifts. At the highest settings the movement gets so slow you stop hearing it as pitch modulation.
tip: At very high DAMP, blend in some dry signal with MIX — then the slow delay-time drift is heard as a lovely, gentle chorus instead of vibrato.

DEPTH
How strong the pitch wobble is overall. The whole range is deliberately focused on subtle variations rather than extreme warble.
tip: Less is more here — this pedal shines with restraint. Remember DEPTH interacts with both RATE and DAMP, so tweaking one affects how the others feel.

Sets the intensity (amount) of the modulation applied to the delay time.
LPG
Controls how bright the effect is and how it responds to your playing dynamics. Low settings make the sound darker, cut off quiet notes, and reduce sustain (a choked, gated feel). High settings make it brighter, more sustained, and may reveal some of the bucket brigade chip's natural noise.
tip: Think of it as a touch-sensitive tone/response control — lower it for a gated, lo-fi choke effect that reacts to how hard you pick; raise it for openness and sustain.

Sets the amount of envelope signal sent to the recovery filter (voltage-controlled low pass filter) and gate circuit.
MIX
Fully clockwise (full wet) gives pure vibrato — just the pitch-shifting effect with no clean signal. Turning it counter-clockwise blends in your dry signal, which creates classic chorus-type sounds.
tip: Full wet is essential when setting up the internal LPG adjust trimpot. For everyday chorus shimmer, back it off from full wet to taste.

How loud the pedal is. Unity (same volume engaged as bypassed) is around noon, and there's plenty of extra output on tap above that if you want a boost.

LPG adjust trimpot
A tiny internal screw that tunes the resting brightness and how easily the pedal 'opens up' when you play. Lowering it makes the filter more aggressive/darker at rest, raising the threshold so it takes more playing energy to open.
tip: Set MIX full wet, LPG at minimum, DEPTH at minimum, then listen and turn the trimpot in tiny increments — clockwise to raise the frequency, counter-clockwise to lower. It's extremely sensitive, so move it barely at all, and momentarily turn up LPG after each tweak to check how it responds to your playing.

BOOST jumper
Sets whether the pedal expects a weak signal or a strong one. Leave it on for guitar. If you're getting unwanted distortion at the input, flip it off to tame the gain by 6 dB.
tip: Default (BOOST on, PAD off) is ideal for high-impedance, low-output sources like single-coil guitar pickups.

What it is
An analog K-Field Modulator pedal that produces non-cyclical, randomized vibrato/chorus/flanger modulation for lo-fi, nostalgic guitar tones.
The Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water is a hand-built analog effects pedal from Hull, Québec that the makers describe as a 'K-Field Modulator.' At heart it's a warped, dreamy chorus/vibrato built around a bucket brigade device — an old-school analog chip that delays your signal by a few dozen milliseconds. But instead of the smooth, regular wobble you get from a normal chorus, Shallow Water modulates that delay time randomly, giving it a woozy, uncertain, nostalgic, seasick quality — like a tape that got a little water-damaged and warped.
Sonically it lives in the subtle-to-strange zone. Dialed gently it adds gorgeous, unpredictable pitch drift and a lo-fi haze that makes chords shimmer and slowly detune. Pushed harder it gets pleasantly unstable, gated, and murky. It's famous for a soft, dark, vintage character rather than a bright, obvious effect. Guitarists, keyboard players, and synth users love it for ambient parts, clean chord work, and adding an 'old memory' feel to anything.
What makes it special is two design quirks: the modulation moves randomly (a microcontroller generates random voltage steps at random time intervals), and there's a 'recovery filter' — a low pass filter that reacts to how hard you play, cleaning up the bucket brigade's noise while adding bounce, choke, and gate-like behavior. First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Plug a standard center-negative, regulated 9 to 9.6 VDC adapter into the DC jack on top (there is no battery option). Always double-check your supply's voltage and polarity first.
- 02Run a cable from your guitar into IN and from OUT to your amp. Leave the internal jumpers alone to start — the factory default (BOOST on, PAD off) is set up for guitar.
- 03Set a safe starting point: MIX around 3 o'clock (mostly wet), DEPTH low, RATE around noon, DAMP around noon, LPG around noon, VOLUME at noon.
- 04Step on the footswitch to engage the effect (true bypass, so you'll hear it click in). Play some sustained chords.
- 05Slowly raise DEPTH until you hear a gentle, wandering pitch drift. Because the modulation is random, it won't be a steady wobble — that's the point.
- 06Turn MIX counter-clockwise a little to blend in dry signal for a chorus feel, or leave it full clockwise for a pure vibrato.
- 07Play with RATE and DAMP together to find the character you want — nervous and quick, or slow and swampy. Adjust LPG to control how bright and bouncy the pedal responds to your picking.
- 08Set VOLUME so the pedal is about as loud engaged as bypassed (unity is around noon).
How the sound flows
Your instrument plugs into the IN jack. Right away it hits an input stage with two internal jumpers (BOOST and PAD) that set how much level and impedance the pedal expects — set up for guitar by default. From there the signal splits: part of it stays dry (unaffected), and part goes into the delay line (the bucket brigade device) where it's held back by a few dozen milliseconds. Meanwhile, a separate random-modulation engine — a microcontroller pseudo-random generator feeding an integrator/filter — constantly nudges that delay time up and down, which is what creates the wandering pitch (vibrato). RATE sets how often those random shifts happen, DAMP smooths how abruptly they move, and DEPTH sets how strong they are. After the delay line, the signal passes through a recovery filter (a voltage-controlled low pass filter) and gate that strips out the bucket brigade's noise; this filter is driven by an envelope follower that watches how hard you're playing, so the tone opens and chokes in response to your attack (controlled by LPG). Questions owners actually ask
Why doesn't the wobble sound steady like a normal chorus?+
Because it isn't supposed to. Shallow Water modulates the delay time randomly — a microcontroller generates random voltage steps at random time intervals — so the pitch drifts unpredictably rather than pulsing evenly. That wandering, 'uncertain' quality is the whole point of the pedal.
How do I get a chorus sound versus a vibrato sound?+
Use the MIX knob. Full clockwise (full wet) gives pure vibrato — just the modulated signal. Turn MIX counter-clockwise to blend in your dry signal, and the mixing of dry and wet creates classic chorus shimmer. Adding dry signal also lets you hear slow movement (at high DAMP) as chorus.
I set RATE and DAMP high but I'm hearing less modulation, not more. Is it broken?+
No, that's normal and expected. At high RATE the changes happen quickly, but at high DAMP the filter/integrator is too sluggish to let those quick changes through, so the perceived modulation drops. RATE and DAMP have a tricky interaction — you have to balance them by ear.
Can I run it on a battery?+
No. There's no battery connection inside. It needs a standard center-negative, regulated 9 to 9.6 VDC power supply (2.1mm jack), drawing up to 40 mA. Always check voltage and polarity before plugging in; it's protected against reverse polarity and overvoltage, but you should still verify.
Why does the pedal sound dark or choke my quieter notes?+
That's the recovery filter and gate, controlled by the LPG knob. At low LPG settings the sound is darker, quiet notes get choked off, and sustain is reduced — a gated, lo-fi character. Turn LPG up for a brighter, more sustaining sound. If you want to fine-tune this behavior further, there's an internal LPG adjust trimpot.
It's distorting at the input — what do I do?+
Open the pedal and move the BOOST jumper to its off position, which cuts input gain by 6 dB. If you're feeding it a line-level source (not a guitar), also switch the PAD jumper on for another 6 dB of reduction and a lower input impedance.
Where should I set VOLUME so it doesn't change my level when I turn it on?+
Unity gain — where engaged and bypassed volumes match — is around noon. There's plenty of extra output above that if you want to use it as a boost.
Should I turn everything up to hear the effect better?+
Not necessarily. Shallow Water is designed around subtlety — the DEPTH range is focused on gentle variations, and the makers explicitly say 'less is more.' Small moves on DEPTH, RATE, and DAMP go a long way; the beauty is in the restrained, nostalgic drift rather than obvious warble.
