INPUT
This is your main 'how much compression' knob. Turn it up and the pedal squashes harder; turn it down and it barely touches your signal. Watch the gain-reduction meter as you set it.
tip: Set this by ear and by meter together: play your loudest passage and dial in until the gain-reduction meter shows the amount of squash you want (around 8dB for everyday use, 10dB for country spank).

Sets the level of the signal entering the compressor circuit. Because this is essentially the threshold control, higher input levels push more of your signal over the threshold and result in more compression.
OUTPUT
Compression usually makes things quieter overall, so this knob lets you bring the volume back up to match your bypassed level — or push it past that to use the pedal as a clean boost for solos.
tip: Set your compression first, then use OUTPUT so that flipping the pedal on and off doesn't change your perceived loudness. Crank it above unity for an instant solo boost.

Sets the final output level of the pedal. It does not affect the amount of compression at all — it's purely a volume control after the compression has happened.
ATTACK
This decides whether the compressor pounces instantly or waits a moment. Fast (counter-clockwise) grabs the pick attack immediately for a smoother, softer sound; slow (clockwise) lets the initial 'snap' of each note through before clamping down, keeping your pick attack punchy.
tip: For a percussive, snappy country or funk sound, use a slower attack so the pick transient pokes through. For smooth, mellow leads, use a faster attack to tame the initial hit.

Controls how quickly the compressor starts reducing gain once a signal crosses the threshold. Attack time increases (gets slower) as you turn clockwise. Range: 50 microseconds to 50 milliseconds.
RELEASE
This sets how fast the compressor lets go after grabbing a note. Fast release feels lively and can add a 'breathing' pumping effect; slow release is smoother and more even but can dull the sound if too slow.
tip: If you hear an unnatural pumping or 'sucking' between notes, slow the release down slightly. For sustain-heavy leads, a medium-to-slow release keeps notes singing evenly.

MIX
Instead of choosing between 'compressed' or 'natural,' this knob lets you have both at once. Mixing some of your untouched dry sound back in restores the natural dynamics and life that heavy compression can flatten out.
tip: The classic trick: squash the compressed signal really hard (sounds over-compressed on its own), then back the MIX off from fully clockwise until you blend in enough dry signal — you get huge sustain and excitement while keeping your natural attack.

Blends between the dry (uncompressed) signal and the wet (compressed) signal. Fully clockwise is 100% wet/compressed; fully counter-clockwise is 100% dry. This enables parallel compression.
TONE
A single knob that tilts your tone brighter or darker. Right of center makes things crisper and more cutting; left of center makes things warmer and fuller. It's a see-saw — as one end goes up, the other comes down.
tip: Compression can sometimes dull your top end; a small clockwise nudge restores brightness and sparkle. For bass or a warmer lead tone, go counter-clockwise.

A 'tilt' style tone/EQ control centered at 500Hz. Turning clockwise boosts treble and cuts bass simultaneously; turning counter-clockwise cuts treble and boosts bass. Noon is flat/neutral.
Switches & toggles
RATIO switch (2:1 | 4:1 | 10:1)
This picks how hard the compressor clamps. 2:1 barely squeezes and mostly just sweetens your tone; 4:1 is the everyday do-anything setting; 10:1 seriously flattens your dynamics for maximum sustain and a heavily-compressed effect.
tip: Start on 4:1 for almost everything. Use 2:1 when you want the compression to be invisible, and 10:1 when you want obvious squash, endless sustain, or a limiter-style sound.

A three-position switch setting the compression ratio — how aggressively gain is reduced once the signal is over the threshold. 2:1 is gentle and very transparent; 4:1 is a versatile general-purpose setting with a wide range; 10:1 is heavy compression, close to limiting.
SIDECHAIN HPF switch (120Hz | OFF | 240Hz)
This stops booming low notes from hogging all the compression. Without it, a big low string can trigger heavy squashing across your whole sound. Switch it on and the compressor ignores that low rumble when deciding what to do, so your lows stay full and powerful while high notes still get controlled.
tip: Especially useful on bass and for palm-muted low riffs. Try 120Hz first; go to 240Hz if the lows are still triggering too much compression. Your actual bass tone is unaffected — only the detection is filtered.

A three-position switch inserting a high-pass filter into the sidechain (detection) circuit — not the audio path itself. It removes low frequencies from what the compressor 'listens to' when deciding how much to compress. OFF (center) means the detector hears everything; 120Hz and 240Hz progressively ignore more low-end energy.
Footswitches
Bypass stompswitch
The foot button that turns the pedal on and off. Light on means you're compressing; light off means the pedal is completely out of the way, as if it weren't there.
tip: Hold this switch down while powering on to enter advanced configuration mode, where you can set whether the pedal starts up engaged or bypassed (see the FAQ).

GAIN REDUCTION meter
This shows you how hard the pedal is squashing at any moment. The further down the meter lights up, the more compression is happening. It's your visual guide for dialing in the INPUT knob.
tip: Use it to set repeatable amounts: aim for about 8dB reduction on your loudest hits for everyday playing, or 10dB for a snappier country sound.

tip: You need a 1/8" TRS (stereo) plug wired tip=send, ring=return. Most players never use this — it's a pro feature for creative routing and ducking effects.

What it is
A transparent analog guitar/bass compressor pedal with studio-style controls including input/gain-reduction metering, attack, release, mix for parallel compression, and a sidechain insert.
The Empress Effects Compressor MKII is a compact, studio-grade compressor pedal for electric guitar and bass. A compressor's job is to even out your playing: it automatically turns down the loud notes and lets the quiet ones catch up, so your sound becomes more consistent, punchier, and can sustain for longer. Unlike most stompbox compressors that give you just one or two knobs, the MKII hands you the same detailed controls found on expensive rack gear — separate attack and release, a mix knob for parallel compression, an external sidechain input, and full metering so you can actually see what the compressor is doing.
Sonically it ranges from completely invisible 'glue' that just makes your tone feel sweeter and more polished (at gentle settings) to aggressive, spanky country-style squash and smooth limiting that eats pick attacks and delivers endless sustain. It's genuinely transparent when you want it to be — high-quality, low-noise, and clean-sounding — which is why it became a favorite with both guitarists and bassists.
This MKII version adds two features over the original: a 'tilt' tone control that lets you brighten or darken the compressed signal, and a switchable sidechain high-pass filter that stops booming low notes (especially on bass) from over-triggering the compression. It's also half the size of the original, running on standard 9V pedal power.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Connect a 9V DC power supply (negative tip, at least 100mA) to the barrel jack — the pedal does not run on batteries.
- 02Plug your guitar or bass into the input jack (rear) and run a cable from the output jack to your amp.
- 03Start with these settings: RATIO on 4:1 (the great all-purpose middle position), MIX fully clockwise (100% compressed), TONE at noon, ATTACK around noon, RELEASE around noon, and SIDECHAIN HPF set to OFF (center).
- 04Set OUTPUT to about noon and turn INPUT down low to start.
- 05Play your loudest and slowly turn up the INPUT knob while watching the GAIN REDUCTION meter (the upper row of LEDs). Aim for about 8dB of gain reduction on your hardest hits — that's a great general starting point that adds sustain and consistency while keeping your dynamics.
- 06Use the OUTPUT knob to match the pedal's volume to your bypassed volume, so turning it on doesn't jump up or drop in loudness.
- 07Step on the footswitch to compare bypassed vs. engaged (the LED glows when the compressor is active) and fine-tune from there.
How the sound flows
Your instrument plugs into the input jack on the rear of the pedal. The INPUT knob first sets how hot the signal is when it hits the compressor circuit — the hotter it is, the more the compressor clamps down. The signal then passes through the gain-reduction stage, which does the actual squashing based on the RATIO switch (how hard) and the ATTACK and RELEASE knobs (how fast it grabs and lets go). A separate 'sidechain' detection circuit listens to the signal (taken from after compression, known as 'feedback' style) and tells the main circuit how much to reduce; the SIDECHAIN HPF switch filters low frequencies out of what that detector hears. After compression, the TONE control tilts the sound brighter or darker, and the MIX knob blends the compressed signal back together with your untouched dry signal for parallel compression. Finally the OUTPUT knob sets the final volume before the signal leaves through the output jack. A true-bypass footswitch decides whether all of this is in your signal path or completely out of it.

How do I set it up without overthinking it?+
Put RATIO on 4:1, MIX fully clockwise, TONE at noon, ATTACK and RELEASE at noon, SIDECHAIN HPF off. Turn INPUT up while playing your loudest until the gain-reduction meter shows about 8dB. Then use OUTPUT to match your bypassed volume. That's a great, versatile starting sound.
Can I run it on a battery?+
No. The Compressor MKII has no battery compartment. It requires an external 9V DC power supply with negative tip polarity that supplies at least 100mA of current. Empress lists compatible supplies at empresseffects.com/power.
What's the MIX knob actually for?+
It blends your compressed signal with your untouched dry signal — called parallel compression. Compression can flatten your natural dynamics, so mixing dry signal back in restores life and punch. The pro move: squash hard until it sounds over-compressed, then back MIX off from fully wet to blend in dry signal — you keep sustain plus your natural attack.
What does the SIDECHAIN HPF switch do, and should I use it?+
It's a high-pass filter that only affects what the compressor 'listens to,' not your actual tone. It stops loud low notes from triggering too much compression across your whole signal. Bassists and anyone playing heavy low riffs should try it (120Hz first, then 240Hz if needed) to keep the low end full while still controlling high notes. It leaves your real bass tone untouched.
My compression sounds like it's pumping or breathing unnaturally. How do I fix it?+
That's usually the release being too fast, or too much gain reduction. Turn the RELEASE knob clockwise to slow it down for a smoother return, and/or turn the INPUT down so you're compressing less (watch the gain-reduction meter). Switching to a gentler ratio like 2:1 also helps it sound more natural.
How do I make the pedal start up already turned on (or off)?+
Hold down the footswitch while you power the pedal on. The first red gain-reduction LED flashes to show you're in advanced configuration mode. Press the footswitch to toggle: LED 1 lit means it starts bypassed, LED 2 lit means it starts engaged. Then press and hold the footswitch for 2 seconds to save and exit.
Why can't I hear the compression working even though it's on?+
At transparent settings (2:1 ratio, low INPUT) the effect is meant to be subtle — it won't sound 'compressed' so much as sweeter and more even. To hear it clearly, switch RATIO to 10:1 and turn up INPUT until the gain-reduction meter lights up well down its scale. Also make sure MIX is fully clockwise (100% compressed) while you're learning what it does.
How is the tone control different from a normal EQ knob?+
It's a 'tilt' EQ centered at 500Hz — a see-saw. Turning it clockwise boosts treble while cutting bass at the same time; counter-clockwise does the reverse. Noon is flat. One knob smoothly shifts your overall balance brighter or darker, which is handy for restoring sparkle that compression can dull, or warming things up for bass.
