Knobs
VOL
This is the overall loudness knob for the effect. Because volume-shaping effects can end up much quieter or louder than your bypassed signal, you'll use this to match levels.
tip: This knob has a lot of gain available, so it can push things into clipping/distortion. If you hear unwanted crackle or breakup, turn VOL down and it usually clears up.
show text from manual
Sets the master output level of the entire pedal.
BLEND
This is your 'how much effect vs. how much clean guitar' knob. Fully clockwise is all effect and no clean; counter-clockwise brings your natural guitar tone back in underneath.
tip: BLEND secretly does two other jobs depending on secondary modes: in Harmonix Blend mode it mixes clean vs. fuzz before the envelopes (recreating the vintage 'Harmonics' knob), and in Return Blend mode it mixes the RETURN jack signal against the shaped output. See the secondary modes.
show text from manual
By default, sets the master wet/dry mix between your untouched dry signal (INPUT) and all the effects the pedal produces. Its output feeds directly into VOL. Turning clockwise increases effect and decreases dry.
ATTACK
This controls how slowly each note fades in. Low settings = the note appears instantly; high settings = a slow, ghostly swell like a bowed violin or a backwards recording. All the way down turns the swell off.
tip: For the classic backwards/swell sound, keep ATTACK in the 10 o'clock–noon range and DECAY maxed. In Poly mode the knob positions do NOT match Mono mode's timing, so re-dial by ear.
show text from manual
Sets the swell/fade-in time of the volume envelope, from 4ms to 8 seconds in Mono mode. Turning clockwise lengthens the fade-in; turning fully counter-clockwise (minimum) disables the attack portion entirely.
DECAY
This controls how quickly each note dies away after it fades in. Short settings chop notes into snappy staccato stabs; long settings let notes ring longer. All the way up (maximum) turns the fade-out off completely.
tip: For pure swell effects, keep DECAY at maximum (off). For short, plucky, staccato 'stabs' turn it down. Combine a fast Attack with a fast Decay for percussive blips.
show text from manual
Sets the fade-out/staccato time of the volume envelope, from 4ms to 8 seconds in Mono mode. Turning clockwise lengthens the fade-out; turning fully clockwise (maximum) disables the decay portion entirely.
SENS
This tunes how easily your playing sets off the effect. Turn it up and even soft notes trigger a fresh swell; turn it down and only harder plucks trigger. Use the flashing P LED to help you dial it in.
tip: In Poly mode, maxing SENS produces intentional bubbling noises — that's normal. In tremolo (Continuous Envelope) mode, set SENS to minimum for a free-running tremolo that doesn't restart every time you pluck.
show text from manual
Sets the sensitivity threshold for pluck detection. In Mono mode it decides how hard you must play to trigger (or re-trigger) the envelope. In Poly mode it works similarly but over a narrower range, and only applies when both ATTACK and DECAY are active.
HARMONIX
This is the fuzz intensity knob — how dirty and saturated the distortion gets. More clockwise = more grit and sustain.
tip: Maxed out, the fuzz gets very noisy when you're not playing. If that bugs you, back it off to about 4 o'clock. Turning it down from max may briefly mute the signal for a split second — that's normal.
show text from manual
Sets the gain/saturation amount of the internal Harmonix distortion. Only active when the H LED is lit.
TONE
The fuzz's treble control. Turn it up for a brighter, cutting fuzz; turn it down for a darker, rounder tone.
tip: Only affects the sound when the fuzz is switched on; it does nothing to your clean signal.
show text from manual
Sets the brightness of the Harmonix distortion. Clockwise = brighter. Only active when the H LED is lit.
H.VOL
The loudness knob just for the fuzz. Because this fuzz can get very loud, this lets you balance it against your clean tone.
tip: Start it low, around 9 o'clock, until you get a feel for it. If you use the pedal purely as a fuzz (taking output from the SEND jack), H.VOL becomes your master volume.
show text from manual
Sets the output volume of the Harmonix distortion section. Only active when the H LED is lit.
Footswitches
BYPASS footswitch (and Status LED)
The main on/off stomp. Light on = effect active; light off = clean bypassed guitar. It's also the 'hold this first' button for entering most of the pedal's hidden modes.
tip: In Manual Trigger mode this footswitch fires the volume envelope on each tap instead of your playing; in that mode, hold it 2 seconds to actually bypass. Hold it while powering up to do a factory reset.
show text from manual
Press and release to toggle between the effect and true buffered bypass; the Status LED lights when the effect is engaged. Doubles as the manual envelope trigger in Manual Trigger mode, and is the key held during many secondary-mode combinations.
HARMONIX/PRESET footswitch
Normally your fuzz stomp. But you can convert it into a preset-scroller: each tap then steps through Preset 1, 2, 3 and back to your live sound. It's also used in combos to enter tremolo mode.
tip: When switched to preset-cycle duty, your current fuzz on/off status gets saved into the live mode. This footswitch role is remembered after power-down but is not saved per-preset.
show text from manual
By default, press and release turns the Harmonix fuzz on/off (shown by the H LED). Hold ~2 seconds until the P LED lights to reassign it to cycle through the three presets and live mode instead.
Display & indicators
H LED
Simple indicator: lit means the fuzz is on. The three small fuzz knobs only do anything when this light is on.
show text from manual
Lights when the Harmonix fuzz is engaged; off when it's not.
P LED
Your visual metronome for pluck detection — watch it flash to see whether the pedal is 'hearing' each note, which makes setting SENS much easier. If it's solid, your left footswitch is in preset-scrolling mode.
tip: If it isn't flashing when you play (in Mono mode), turn SENS up until it does. Remember it stays dark in Poly mode even when things are working.
show text from manual
In Mono mode, flashes briefly each time a pluck is detected and triggers an envelope; lights solid when the HARMONIX/PRESET footswitch is set to cycle presets. Does NOT flash for pluck detection in Poly mode.
Other
Continuous Envelope (Tremolo) mode
Turns the pedal into a rhythmic volume-pulsing tremolo whose shape and speed you set with the Attack and Decay knobs. It restarts each time you pluck, unless you set SENS to minimum for a free-running pulse.
tip: In Poly mode this same mode sounds like cascading filters rather than a normal tremolo. It's saved per-preset and set independently for Mono and Poly.
show text from manual
Automatically restarts the Attack envelope as soon as the Decay finishes, turning the pedal into a tremolo. ATTACK sets the rise time, DECAY sets the fall time. Enter by holding BYPASS then tapping the HARMONIX/PRESET footswitch (PRESET 1 blinks fast = on; PRESET 3 blinks slow = off).
Harmonix Blend mode
Lets you blend clean and fuzzy tone together and then run that mix through the swells — great for bowed-instrument sounds with body and grit. When you exit, BLEND goes back to its normal wet/dry job.
tip: The blend amount is saved to presets. You can even assign an expression pedal to sweep this blend while in the mode.
show text from manual
Temporarily repurposes the BLEND knob to mix dry vs. Harmonix fuzz before the volume envelopes (recreating the vintage 'Harmonics' knob). Enter with fuzz on: hold BYPASS then tap PRESET 2 (PRESET 2 + Status LEDs blink); tap PRESET 2 again to exit.
Return Blend mode
When using the effects loop, this lets you dial in how much of the looped/return signal you hear versus the shaped output. Handy for parallel-style textures.
tip: Only works when something is plugged into RETURN. The setting is saved to presets.
show text from manual
Temporarily repurposes BLEND to mix the RETURN jack signal (counter-clockwise) against the volume-envelope output (clockwise). Requires a plug in RETURN. Enter: hold BYPASS then tap PRESET 3 (PRESET 3 + Status LEDs blink); tap PRESET 3 again to exit.
Return Bypass mode
Changes what you hear when the pedal is off: instead of your normal input passing through, the effects-loop return signal is what comes out. Useful for certain loop routings.
tip: With Return Bypass on, the fuzz is NOT sent out the SEND jack while bypassed, even if the fuzz is switched on.
show text from manual
When enabled, connects the RETURN jack to the OUTPUT jack while the pedal is bypassed (a digital bypass). Toggle by holding POLY + PRESET 3 and tapping the BYPASS footswitch (Status LED fast blink = on, slow blink = off).
Manual Envelope Trigger (BYPASS footswitch)
Lets you decide by foot exactly when each swell happens instead of the pedal listening for your pick. Tap to fire a swell; to actually bypass in this mode, hold the footswitch for 2 seconds.
tip: Saved per-preset. Great for dramatic, perfectly-timed swells where you don't want note dynamics triggering things.
show text from manual
Disables automatic pluck detection and instead fires a new envelope each time you tap the BYPASS footswitch. Toggle by holding POLY and tapping BYPASS (Status LED fast blink = on, slow blink = off).
Internal Compressor toggle
The compressor evens out your playing volume so sustained notes keep feeding the swell engine. Turn it off for a rawer, more dynamic response. You can set it separately for Mono and Poly modes.
tip: Saved per-preset. Leave it on for smooth, even swells; try it off if you want more natural dynamics.
show text from manual
Enables/disables the emulated input compressor (on by default, separately for Mono and Poly). Toggle: set the desired mode with POLY, then hold POLY + PRESET 3 and tap PRESET 2 (PRESET 1 fast blink = on, slow blink = off).
Envelope Curve select (Attack / Decay)
Fine-tunes the 'feel' of the fade-in and fade-out — whether the volume ramps in a straight line, eases in gently, or does a smooth S-shape. Only affects Mono mode.
tip: Parabolic (default) gives the most natural swell for most players. Saved per-preset. These curves do nothing in Poly mode.
show text from manual
Chooses the taper shape of the Mono-mode envelopes: linear, parabolic (default), or s-curve, independently for Attack and Decay. Hold POLY + PRESET 2, then tap PRESET 1 for Attack curve or PRESET 3 for Decay curve; then pick PRESET 1=linear, 2=parabolic, 3=s-curve.
Harmonix FX Loop Position
Decides whether the fuzz hits your signal on the way out to your other pedals, or on the way back in from them. Lets you control where the dirt sits relative to your loop.
tip: If you're not using the RETURN jack, the fuzz just appears on the SEND signal as normal. Saved per-preset.
show text from manual
Moves the Harmonix fuzz block within the effects loop — either before the SEND jack (default) or onto the RETURN input. Toggle by holding POLY + PRESET 3 and tapping PRESET 1 (PRESET 2 fast blink = Return→Harmonix, slow blink = Harmonix→Send).
Factory Reset
A full wipe that returns everything to how it left the factory — erasing all your presets and custom settings.
tip: Defaults after reset: expression controls VOL, tremolo off, parabolic curves, clock/manual triggering off, compressor on, fuzz before SEND, Return Bypass off, and both special blends set to 100%.
show text from manual
Restores all presets and secondary modes to factory defaults. Unplug power, hold the BYPASS footswitch, reapply power, and keep holding until one or more PRESET LEDs flash, then release.
Side panels
Jacks & connectors
INPUT jack
Where your guitar (or the pedal before it) plugs in.
tip: Place this pedal near the front of your chain so pluck detection works right — after a compressor or pitch shifter is fine, but before distortions and wahs is best.
show text from manual
The main audio input, 1/4" phone jack. Input impedance 1MΩ.
OUTPUT jack
The main output to your amp or the next pedal.
show text from manual
The main audio output, 1/4" phone jack. Output impedance 500Ω. The volume envelope and other effects come out here.
SEND jack
An output that sends your signal (with fuzz, if on) out to your own pedals before the volume-shaping happens. Pair it with RETURN to loop other effects into the swell engine.
tip: You can use SEND as your main output to run the pedal purely as a fuzz box — then the HARMONIX footswitch is your on/off and H.VOL is your master volume; VOL, SENS, ATTACK and DECAY do nothing in that setup.
show text from manual
Reproduces the input signal (and by default the Harmonix fuzz when active), tapped after pluck detection but before the volume envelopes. 1/4" jack, 500Ω. Feeds an external effects loop.
RETURN jack
Where you bring signal back in to be volume-shaped. Whatever's here gets the fade-in/fade-out treatment. Clever trick: plug a second instrument in here and have your guitar at INPUT trigger the swells on it.
tip: In Mono mode your guitar at INPUT can trigger the envelope while the RETURN signal is what actually gets shaped — great for taming pedals (like big reverbs or fuzzes) that normally smear the attack.
show text from manual
Receives the signal coming back from an external effects loop or another instrument, and routes it through the volume envelopes. 1/4" jack, 2MΩ. If nothing is plugged in, the INPUT (or fuzz output) is used instead.
EXP jack
Plug in a rocker pedal or a modular/CV signal to sweep the knobs with your foot or another device, or feed in a clock to trigger swells in perfect time. Every knob can be assigned.
tip: Wiring must be Sleeve=heel, Ring=toe, Tip=wiper. Suggested pedals: EHX Expression, Moog EP-3, Roland EV-5, Boss FV-500L. After a factory reset, the expression pedal controls VOL by default.
show text from manual
Accepts an expression pedal (TRS), control voltage (TS, 0–5V), or an external clock pulse (1.5–15Vpp) to control any knob or trigger the envelopes. Nominal expression pedal impedance 10kΩ (don't go below 6kΩ).
9V Power jack
Where the power adapter plugs in. This pedal is thirsty — it needs at least 140mA, so a typical weaker 9V supply won't cut it.
tip: Using an adapter rated below 140mA, or with the wrong polarity, causes unreliable behavior and can damage the pedal and void the warranty. Stick with the included supply.
show text from manual
Accepts the supplied EHX 9.6DC-200 adapter: 9VDC, 140mA, center-negative. Do not exceed 10.5VDC.
Other
External Clock Trigger
Lets an external device like a drum machine or modular clock fire the swells in perfect rhythmic sync. When enabled with a plug in EXP, your normal pluck detection is switched off.
tip: Remove the EXP plug or disable this mode to get automatic pluck detection back. The setting is saved per-preset.
show text from manual
Configures the EXP jack to accept a clock pulse (1.5–15Vpp) that triggers the volume envelopes. Toggle by holding POLY and tapping PRESET 1 (PRESET 2 fast blink = on, slow blink = off).
What it is
A digitally reimagined Tape Reverse Simulator pedal that shapes volume envelopes to produce swells, reverse/backward tape sounds, staccato notes, and bowed-instrument effects with built-in Harmonix fuzz, mono/poly modes, an FX loop, and presets.
The Electro-Harmonix Attack Decay is a volume-shaping guitar pedal, a modern re-creation of a legendary vintage effect once called the 'Tape Reverse Simulator.' Instead of changing pitch or adding echo, it reshapes how each note starts and stops. It can make notes fade in slowly (a swell, like a violin or a backwards tape recording), or cut off abruptly for short, choppy, staccato stabs — or both at once. Add the built-in fuzz distortion and you get bowed-instrument sounds, screaming leads, and rich textures.
What makes this modern version special is its flexibility. It has two main personalities: Mono mode, which applies one volume shape to everything you play (like the original), and Poly mode (borrowed from the EHX HOG2) which gives every single note you play its own independent fade-in/fade-out — great for shimmering, cascading, layered soundscapes even when you strum full chords. It also has a fully adjustable fuzz, a built-in effects loop so you can insert other pedals into the volume-shaping chain, expression-pedal and control-voltage inputs, three savable presets, and a tremolo mode.
In short: this is a swell/volume-envelope and fuzz pedal for anyone who wants backwards-tape effects, bowed pads, snappy staccato picking, ambient textures, or auto-tremolo. It sounds anywhere from gentle and ghostly to noisy and chaotic depending on how you set it.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Plug the supplied EHX 9.6DC-200 power supply into the 9V jack on top and into a wall outlet. (This pedal needs 140mA — don't substitute a weaker adapter or it will misbehave.)
- 02Plug your guitar into the INPUT jack and run a cable from the OUTPUT jack to your amp.
- 03Make sure none of the PRESET buttons or the POLY button (top-left) are lit — if any is lit, press it once to turn it off. Also make sure the H LED above the left footswitch is off; if it's lit, tap the left footswitch to turn the fuzz off.
- 04Turn BLEND fully clockwise (maximum) so you hear only the effect and no dry signal mixed in.
- 05Set DECAY to maximum (this disables the fade-out for now) and set ATTACK to about 10 o'clock.
- 06Set VOL to about 50% and SENS to about 50%.
- 07Play single notes: you should hear each note swell in like a volume-pedal or backwards-tape effect. If notes don't trigger, turn SENS up; if it re-triggers too easily, turn SENS down. Watch the P LED — it flashes each time a pluck is detected.
- 08To try the polyphonic version, tap the POLY button (it lights up). You may need to turn ATTACK up a bit. Now play chords and arpeggios for lush, layered swells.
- 09To add fuzz, first set H.VOL to about 9 o'clock (the fuzz is loud!), then tap the left (HARMONIX) footswitch to turn it on and dial in HARMONIX, TONE, and H.VOL to taste.
How the sound flows
Your guitar plugs into the INPUT jack. First the pedal 'listens' to your playing to detect when you pluck a note (this is the pluck detection that triggers each volume shape). Next comes an internal compressor (on by default) that evens out your volume so sustained notes have enough signal for the effect to work with. After that, the signal can pass through the built-in Harmonix fuzz/distortion (only when it's switched on). At this point the signal is also sent out the SEND jack, so you can route it into your own external pedals and bring them back into the RETURN jack. Whatever arrives at RETURN (or, if nothing is plugged in, your own signal) then passes through the heart of the pedal: the volume envelopes, which apply the fade-in (Attack) and fade-out (Decay) shaping. Finally, the BLEND knob mixes the shaped 'wet' effect against your untouched 'dry' signal, the VOL knob sets overall loudness, and everything leaves through the OUTPUT jack to your amp. An EXP jack on top lets an expression pedal, control voltage, or an external clock control the knobs or trigger the envelopes.
Questions owners actually ask
Why is my swell effect not triggering on every note?+
You need more sensitivity. Turn the SENS mini knob up until the P LED flashes with each note you play (in Mono mode). Also, don't let old notes ring out while playing new ones — in Mono mode a sustaining note makes it hard for the pedal to detect the next pluck. Note the P LED won't flash in Poly mode even when things are working.
What's the difference between Mono and Poly mode?+
Mono (POLY light off) applies a single volume shape to everything you play, resetting each time you pluck — like the vintage pedal, and it handles chords as one blended swell. Poly (POLY light on) gives every individual note its own independent fade-in/fade-out, so arpeggios and chords shimmer and cascade separately. Poly is great for lush pads but makes bubbling/waterfall noises, especially with both Attack and Decay active. Knob timings differ between the two modes, so re-dial by ear when you switch.
Why does the pedal make weird bubbling or waterfall noises?+
That's normal behavior in Poly mode, especially when both ATTACK and DECAY are turned up, or when the Harmonix fuzz is on (which dramatically exaggerates it). Maxing the SENS knob in Poly mode also intentionally produces bubbling. If you don't want it, use only one part of the envelope (just Attack or just Decay), lower SENS, or switch to Mono mode.
Can I use this as just a fuzz pedal?+
Yes. Take your output from the SEND jack instead of OUTPUT. Then the HARMONIX footswitch turns the fuzz on and off, and the H.VOL knob acts as your master volume. In this setup the VOL, SENS, ATTACK, and DECAY knobs do nothing. Adjust HARMONIX (gain) and TONE to shape the fuzz.
It's either way too loud or too quiet — how do I fix the volume?+
Volume-shaping effects naturally produce a wide range of levels, so use the VOL knob to balance the effect against your bypassed signal. VOL has a lot of gain on tap, which can also cause clipping/breakup — if you hear unwanted crackle, turn VOL down. And remember the fuzz is loud: start H.VOL low (around 9 o'clock).
How do I get a tremolo sound out of it?+
Turn on Continuous Envelope mode: with POLY off, set ATTACK and DECAY to about 9 o'clock and SENS to around 50%. Hold the BYPASS footswitch, tap and release the HARMONIX footswitch, then release BYPASS. PRESET 1 blinking fast confirms it's on. Now the envelope keeps restarting automatically — ATTACK sets the rise, DECAY the fall. For a free-running tremolo that doesn't restart when you pluck, turn SENS to minimum.
My preset button is blinking instead of staying lit — what does that mean?+
It means you loaded that preset but then changed a knob or a mode, so it no longer matches what was saved. Tap the blinking button once to snap back to the saved version, or press and hold it (about 2 seconds until the lights stop blinking) to overwrite the preset with your new settings.
What power supply does it need, and can I use my usual one?+
It needs 9VDC, 140mA, center-negative — and it's power-hungry. Use the included EHX 9.6DC-200 supply. A common lower-current 9V adapter (under 140mA) will cause unreliable behavior, and the wrong polarity or over 10.5VDC can damage the pedal and void the warranty.
