Knobs
Up
Adds a higher, brighter organ note sitting an octave above what you play. Turn it up for a chimey, top-heavy organ tone; leave it down if you only want the lower voices.
tip: The octave-up voice is where most of the 'combo organ' sparkle lives. A little goes a long way on chords — too much can sound thin, so balance it against Down and Direct.

Sets the output level of the octave-up voice generated by the pitch shifter (one octave above the note you play).
Down
Adds a deep, fat organ note an octave below what you play. This is the knob that gives you that big, cathedral-like low end. Great for making a guitar sound like a bass-heavy organ.
tip: Bass players and anyone wanting a huge, subby organ tone should lean on this knob. It tracks low notes surprisingly well for a polyphonic shifter.

Sets the output level of the octave-down voice generated by the pitch shifter (one octave below the note you play).
Choir
Stacks even more octaves on top of the ones you've already dialed in, adding a slight delay for a swelling, full 'church organ' effect. It makes the sound bigger and more three-dimensional. Important: it does absolutely nothing unless both the Up and Down knobs are in use.
tip: Because Choir only works with both octaves active, always set Up and Down first, then bring Choir in. Dial it up gradually — full Choir can get overwhelming and washy fast.

Takes a mix of the Up and Down octave voices and regenerates them, producing an additional two octaves up, two octaves down, and a slightly delayed direct signal. Only functions when both Up and Down are turned up.
Lag
Adds a short delay to the organ voices so they bloom in slightly behind your playing, creating that warbly, breathing quality. Fully left is nearly instant; turning right makes the effect swell and lag further behind the note.
tip: A small amount of Lag gives the pedal its signature 'analog Leslie' warble. Crank it higher for a slow-swell, almost pad-like effect that's beautiful under chords.

Controls the amount of delay applied to the wet (processed) signal. Fully counterclockwise is minimal delay; delay time increases as you turn clockwise.
Tone
Controls the brightness of the organ voices. Turn it clockwise for a brighter, more present organ; turn it counterclockwise to warm things up and tame any harsh or digital-sounding highs.
tip: Rolling Tone back is the fastest way to make the octave voices blend smoothly with your dry signal and sound more vintage and organic.

Direct
Controls how much of your original clean sound is mixed in with the organ voices. Turn it up to keep your instrument's natural attack and clarity; turn it down to hear only the organ effect.
tip: Keep Direct fairly high if you want your playing to stay articulate and recognizable. Turn it all the way down for a pure synth/organ voice with no clean guitar underneath.

Footswitch
Step on it to turn the organ effect on or off. When off, your signal passes through completely unaffected. Remember the pedal needs power to pass any signal at all — with no power, nothing gets through.
tip: Because it's relay-based true bypass, there may be a tiny click when switching. It won't color your tone when bypassed, so you can leave it in your chain worry-free.

Input
This is where you plug your guitar, bass, or other instrument in. The high input impedance means it plays nicely with passive pickups without dulling your tone.
tip: Place the Organizer early in your chain (before drives and modulation) so it tracks your clean note cleanly, or after a compressor for even more consistent tracking.

9V DC Power Jack
This is where the power plugs in. The pedal has no battery option, so it must be powered to work at all. Use a proper pedal power supply — never anything higher than 9 volts.
tip: Use an isolated, transformer-based power supply. Daisy chains and cheap switching adapters let dirty power through, which this DSP-based pedal will translate into extra noise. Never exceed 9V or you risk damaging it.

What it is
A polyphonic pitch-shifting pedal that layers octave-up and octave-down voices to transform a guitar's signal into swirling organ-like tones.
The EarthQuaker Devices Organizer is a polyphonic organ emulator in a compact stompbox. Instead of chorusing or fuzzing your signal, it generates pitch-shifted copies of whatever you play — one octave up, one octave down, and (via the Choir control) even further octaves stacked on top — then blends them with your clean signal to conjure the sound of a vintage combo organ crossed with the quirky 'Guitorgan.' The result is warm, thick, and slightly wobbly, with a hint of the swirling 'Leslie' rotary-speaker warble baked in, which sets it apart from the sterile, clinical octave pedals most people are used to.
What makes it special is that it tracks chords, not just single notes. You can play a full chord anywhere on the neck and it will render the whole thing as an organ voice — something most octave pedals choke on. It works beautifully on guitar and bass, but EQD designed it to handle any sound source: it's been used on vocals, synths, horns, and even drums. If it makes a sound, the Organizer can turn it into an organ.
Under the hood it's a hybrid: the pitch-shifting is done digitally (DSP), but your dry signal stays in a fully analog path, and the pedal uses relay-based true-bypass switching so it's completely out of your signal chain when off. It's hand-built one at a time in Akron, Ohio.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Plug a standard 9V DC power supply (2.1mm barrel, negative center) into the power jack. The pedal will not pass any sound without power, so this comes first. Never use anything higher than 9V.
- 02Connect your instrument to the Input (right side) and your amp to the Output (left side) with instrument cables.
- 03Start with all six knobs at minimum (fully counterclockwise), then bring Direct up to around noon so you can hear your clean signal at a normal level.
- 04Press the footswitch to engage the effect — the LED lights when it's on.
- 05Slowly turn up the Down knob to add a deep octave-below organ tone, then bring in the Up knob for the higher organ voice. Blend to taste against your Direct level.
- 06Set Tone to taste — roll it back (counterclockwise) if the organ voices sound too bright or digital.
- 07Add a touch of Lag (turn it clockwise from minimum) to introduce the warbly, blooming organ feel.
- 08Once you like the octave blend, experiment with the Choir knob for a huge, stacked church-organ sound — remember it only does something when both Up and Down are turned up.
How the sound flows
Your instrument plugs into the Input jack on the right side. From there the signal splits into two paths. One path is the clean, fully analog 'dry' signal — it passes straight through untouched and its volume is set by the Direct knob. The other path goes into the digital pitch-shifting engine, which creates an octave-up voice (level set by the Up knob) and an octave-down voice (level set by the Down knob). If both octaves are active, the Choir control can take a mix of them and regenerate it to add even higher and lower octaves plus a slightly delayed direct tone for a church-organ swell. The whole processed (wet) blend then passes through the Lag control, which adds a short delay for that warbly, blooming feel, and the Tone control, which rolls off treble to warm it up. Finally the wet organ voices and the analog dry signal are recombined and sent out the Output jack on the left side. When the pedal is bypassed via the footswitch, the relay drops all of this out and your dry signal passes through true-bypass.
Questions owners actually ask
Why can't I hear any difference when I turn the Choir knob?+
The Choir control only works when both the Up and Down octave knobs are turned up. It takes a mix of those two voices and regenerates them into extra octaves. If either Up or Down is at zero, Choir does nothing. Bring both octave knobs up first, then Choir will come alive.
Does it really track chords, or just single notes?+
It genuinely tracks chords. Unlike most octave pedals that only handle one note at a time, the Organizer is polyphonic — you can play full chords anywhere on the neck and it will render the whole chord as an organ voice. It tracks both single notes and chords cleanly on guitar and bass.
Is there a master volume, and why do I hear a little hiss?+
No, there's no master volume — the output level is set by combining the Up, Down, Choir, and Direct knobs. The pedal has an output gain stage without a master control, so even with everything at zero you'll hear a small amount of white noise, similar to an overdrive at unity gain. It's normal and inaudible while you're actually playing, but it gets more noticeable if you place the pedal in front of a high-gain amp or dirt pedals.
Can I run it on 18V or use a battery?+
No on both counts. There's no battery compartment, so it must run on a 9V DC supply (2.1mm negative center). Never run it at a higher voltage — the manual explicitly warns against it, and doing so can damage the pedal. It draws 81mA, so make sure your supply can deliver that.
Why is there no sound at all when I plug in?+
The Organizer needs power to pass any signal. Even though it's true bypass, its relay-based switching won't pass audio without power connected. If you get nothing, check that the power supply is plugged in and working — a dead supply means dead silence.
How do I get that swirly, warbly organ character?+
That comes from the Lag control combined with the built-in hint of Leslie warble. Turn Lag up from its minimum position to add delay to the organ voices so they bloom and swell behind your playing. Pair it with a bit of Choir and rolled-back Tone for a lush, vintage rotary-organ feel.
Can I use it on things other than guitar?+
Absolutely. EQD designed it to handle any sound source — it's been used on vocals, synths, horns, and drums. As long as something makes a sound, the Organizer can turn it into an organ voice. Just be mindful of input levels from line-level gear.
Where should I put it in my pedal chain?+
For the cleanest, most reliable pitch tracking, place it early in your chain — right after your instrument or after a compressor. Putting drive, distortion, or fuzz before it can confuse the tracking. Running dirt or a pushed amp after it, however, gives a great gritty rock-organ tone.
