Sweep
Think of this as where the swoosh 'sits' tonally. Turned up (clockwise) the sweep is brighter, livelier and more intense; turned down (counterclockwise) it's darker, warmer and more laid-back.
tip: Pair a high Sweep with high Resonance for a bright, vocal, wah-like peak; roll Sweep back for a mellow, underwater feel.

Sets the center/peak frequency of the phaser sweep. Clockwise raises the peak frequency, counterclockwise lowers it.
Rate
Fine-tunes how fast the swirl moves. Since it works inside the range set by the 1|2|3 switch, the same knob position gives a slow speed in mode 1 and a fast speed in mode 3. In mode 2 (LFO off) it has no effect.
tip: Watch the flashing red LED — it blinks in time with the sweep, so you can dial in a speed visually even before you play a note.

Controls the speed of the LFO within whichever range the Rate 1|2|3 switch has selected. Clockwise is faster, counterclockwise is slower.
Depth
This is your effect strength knob. Clockwise for a stronger, more obvious phase; counterclockwise for a subtle shimmer. But note: if you flip to Vibrato, this knob stops adjusting intensity and instead just sets how loud the pedal is.
tip: For subtle vintage phasing keep Depth low; for dramatic swooshes crank it. Remember to reset it as a volume when using Vibrato mode.

In Phase mode, sets how much of the phased (wet) signal is mixed with the dry signal, controlling the intensity of the effect. In Vibrato mode, it acts as an overall volume control.
Resonance
This is how sharp and vocal the effect gets. Turned up it becomes more resonant, hollow and pronounced — almost like a wah stuck in place. Turned down it's smooth and gentle.
tip: For true pitch vibrato in Vibrato mode you must turn Resonance down low; high Resonance keeps it sounding more like a vibey phaser.

Controls the regeneration (feedback) of the phased signal. Clockwise adds more resonance and a more pronounced, peaky tone; counterclockwise is more subtle.

Rate 1 | 2 | 3
This is the big mode selector for movement. Flick to 1 for gentle, slow swirls; flick to 3 for fast, dizzy wobble; flick to 2 to stop the movement completely so the effect just sits still like a parked wah.
tip: Use position 2 with Resonance up to get a static, vowel-like tone — great for a fixed 'stuck wah' color that doesn't move.

Three-way toggle that selects the range of the LFO speed. Position 1 is slow sweep mode, position 2 kills the LFO entirely (turning the pedal into a fixed resonant filter), position 3 is fast sweep mode.
Phase/Vibrato
Flip this to Vibrato and the pedal stops blending in your clean tone, so instead of a swirl you get a pitch that wobbles up and down like a warped record. Flip back to Phase for normal phaser behavior.
tip: For classic pitch vibrato: set Phase/Vibrato to Vibrato, turn Resonance all the way down, and use Rate/Depth to taste. Leave Resonance up for a more 'vibe' (Uni-Vibe-style) character.

Toggle that cuts the dry signal to create a vibe/vibrato effect. With the dry signal removed you hear only the wet phased signal; turning Resonance down low produces true pitch vibrato.
Footswitches
Footswitch
Your on/off button. Tap it to turn the effect on and leave it on; tap again to turn it off. Or hold it down to get the effect only for as long as your foot is pressing, then it snaps off when you lift — handy for quick swirl bursts.
tip: Use the momentary hold trick for dropping in a fast vibrato or swirl just on one chord, then releasing to snap back to clean.

Flexi-Switch relay-based true bypass switch. Tap once to activate/latch the effect and tap again to bypass. Hold down for momentary operation — the effect stays on only while held, then bypasses on release.
Display & indicators
LED indicator
A blinking light that pulses in time with the sweep so you can see how fast it's set. It keeps flashing even when the pedal is off, so you can pre-set your speed before kicking it in.
tip: Sync the blink to the tempo of a song by ear/eye before engaging, so the phaser lands in time.

Where you plug in the power. It only takes a standard 9-volt pedal supply with the common center-negative plug. Never use anything higher than 9 volts.
tip: Use an isolated, transformer-based pedal power supply. Daisy chains and cheap switching supplies can introduce hum and noise into this analog circuit.

What it is
A hand-built analog four-stage OTA-based phaser pedal (the "Phase Machine") offering everything from stationary resonant filtering to slow, mellow, and fast swirling phase and vibrato effects.
The EarthQuaker Devices Grand Orbiter is a 4-stage OTA-based phaser pedal, hand-built in Akron, Ohio. A phaser is a modulation effect that splits your signal, shifts part of it in phase, and blends it back in to create sweeping, swirling, watery tones. The Grand Orbiter is unusually versatile for a phaser: it can go from a totally still, resonant fixed filter, to slow and mellow swirls, to fast and dizzy warble. It's 100% analog and fully true bypass.
What makes it special is its three-way Rate range switch (giving slow, LFO-off/fixed-filter, and fast modes) plus a Phase/Vibrato switch that lets it stop being a phaser and become a true pitch vibrato. In vibrato mode the dry (unaffected) signal is removed entirely, so you hear only the pitch-wobbling wet signal. That means one pedal covers classic phaser sweeps, static wah-like resonant tones, and seasick pitch vibrato.
It's a great pedal for adding movement to clean chords, giving leads a vocal quality, faking a rotary-speaker vibe, or getting warped-tape sounds. Because it's OTA-based (a particular analog circuit design), it has a smooth, musical, vintage-flavored character rather than a harsh or clinical one.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Plug a standard 9V DC power supply (negative center, 2.1mm barrel) into the top jack. Do NOT use higher voltage. The pedal needs power even to pass a bypassed signal.
- 02Plug your guitar into the input jack and your amp into the output jack.
- 03Set the Phase/Vibrato toggle to Phase (phaser mode) to start.
- 04Set the small Rate 1|2|3 toggle to position 1 (slow mode).
- 05Start with Sweep around noon, Depth around noon, Resonance around 9 o'clock, and Rate around noon.
- 06Tap the footswitch once to activate the effect. The red LED will flash in time with the sweep speed.
- 07Strum some chords and slowly turn the Rate knob to change speed, Depth to change intensity, and Resonance up for a more pronounced, vocal peak.
- 08To explore: flip Rate to position 3 for fast swirls, or position 2 to freeze the sweep and use it as a stationary resonant filter. Flip to Vibrato and turn Resonance down for pitch-wobble.
How the sound flows
Your guitar plugs into the input jack (mono 1/4"). The signal is split into two paths: a clean 'dry' copy and a 'wet' copy that runs through the 4-stage phaser circuit. An internal LFO (low-frequency oscillator) sweeps the phase of the wet signal up and down — the Rate switch and Rate knob set how fast, the Sweep knob sets the tonal center of that movement, and the Resonance knob feeds the phased signal back on itself to intensify it. The Depth knob then blends the wet phased signal back in with the dry signal to set how strong the effect is. If you flip the Phase/Vibrato switch to Vibrato, the dry signal is cut out completely so you hear only the wet path, turning the effect into pitch vibrato, and Depth then works as an overall volume control. Finally the blended signal exits the output jack. Because the true-bypass switching is relay-based, the pedal must be powered for any sound to pass through it.
Questions owners actually ask
Can I run this pedal on a battery?+
No. The Grand Orbiter has no battery compartment and requires a standard 9V DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative-center barrel. It draws 15mA. Never run it at higher than 9 volts.
Why is there no sound even in bypass?+
The Flexi-Switch true bypass is relay-based, which means the pedal needs power to pass any signal at all — even when bypassed. If you get silence, check that your power supply is connected and working.
How do I get a stationary, non-moving filter sound?+
Flip the Rate 1|2|3 toggle to position 2. This kills the LFO so the sweep stops moving, letting you use the Grand Orbiter as a fixed resonant filter. Dial the tone with the Sweep and Resonance knobs.
How do I get true pitch vibrato?+
Set the Phase/Vibrato toggle to Vibrato (this removes the dry signal) and turn Resonance all the way down. Use the Rate and Depth controls to shape the wobble. Note that in Vibrato mode the Depth knob becomes a volume control, not an intensity control.
What's the difference between the Rate switch and the Rate knob?+
The Rate 1|2|3 switch picks the overall speed range (1 = slow, 2 = LFO off, 3 = fast), while the Rate knob fine-tunes the exact speed within that range. In position 2 the Rate knob does nothing because the LFO is off.
What does the momentary footswitch feature do?+
Thanks to Flexi-Switch technology, you can tap the footswitch once for normal on/off latching, OR hold it down to engage the effect only while your foot is pressing. Release it and the effect turns off. Great for quick swirl or vibrato bursts on a single chord.
Why does the LED keep blinking when the pedal is off?+
That's intentional. The flashing red LED shows the LFO speed at all times, even in bypass, so you can pre-set and visually sync your sweep rate before engaging the effect.
How do I get a subtle vintage phaser versus a dramatic swoosh?+
For subtle phasing, keep Depth and Resonance low and use Rate position 1 (slow). For a dramatic, pronounced effect, turn Depth up, add Resonance, and raise the Sweep knob for a brighter, more intense peak.
