Knobs
SIZE
Think of this as the 'length of the loop chunk' and the master clock for everything that moves. Small settings give short, fast, choppy samples and quick fades; large settings give longer phrases, slower fades and longer holds.
tip: Because Shape and Error timing follow SIZE, you get usable, musical results at any position — turn it down for stuttery blips, up for longer evolving loops.
show text from manual
Sets the length of the Glitch sample and the overall timing of Onward's various sections (Shape and Error timing are both linked to it). When synced to MIDI clock, SIZE sets the subdivision.
MIX
The wet/dry blend. Left is more of your straight guitar, right is more of the sampled effect. Just note that the moment you turn on any ramping dip switch, this knob stops being a blend and becomes the speed control for the automation.
tip: While ramping, you can still nudge the blend: hold the left footswitch down while turning MIX to adjust it without changing ramp speed.
show text from manual
Sets the balance between your dry input signal and Onward's wet effect (affects both Freeze and Glitch). If ramping is engaged, this knob instead controls the ramp/bounce speed.
OCTAVE
Adds a harmony voice. Turn left for a lower, slower octave that fills out the bottom; turn right for a higher, faster octave that adds sparkle. Straight up (noon) turns the harmony off entirely.
tip: Max it to the left for a doomy sub-bass 'synth' that follows you, or right for dense rhythmic interplay when paired with Glitch.
show text from manual
Blends in a second voice at half speed (octave down) on the left half of the sweep or double speed (octave up) on the right half. At noon it is disabled.
ERROR
The 'chaos amount' knob. Low settings keep things tidy; turn it up and Onward starts randomly glitching — dropping out, stuttering, changing speed and direction, depending on which TYPE you've selected. Great for bringing a static pad to life.
tip: Turning ERROR up is also the key to unlocking stereo movement when the SPREAD dip switch is on — glitches randomly favor left or right for a wide, animated image.
show text from manual
Sets the likelihood of a random error occurring, and for the Condition and Playback error types it also controls the intensity. The type of error is chosen by the TYPE toggle.
SUSTAIN
How long a sound lingers. Low settings give short blips and stutters; high gives long pads; all the way up freezes forever. On the Glitch side it doubles as a repeat counter — pick exactly how many echoes you want.
tip: If you want an exact number of Glitch repeats with no extras, set the FADE toggle to the right (fast), since slow FADE adds extra crossfaded repeats.
show text from manual
Sets how long captured sounds hold before fading away. At maximum, sustain is infinite (holds until you play a new note or resample). On the Glitch channel it also selects a specific number of repeats (1x up to 16x, then infinite).
TEXTURE
The 'dirt' knob. Turn left for crunchy, sizzly digital degradation that pushes the effect forward; turn right for warm, smooth overdrive. Noon is clean.
tip: Pairing high TEXTURE with high ERROR and a short SUSTAIN makes intense sounds that flame out quickly — great for aggressive, spitting glitch bursts.
show text from manual
Adds distortion: left half of the sweep reduces sample rate (digital lo-fi grit), right half adds soft-clipping overdrive with compression. At noon it is disabled. A hidden EQ lives behind this knob in the Hidden Options.
SENSITIVITY (hidden — behind SIZE)
Adjusts how loud you have to play before Onward decides to grab a new sample. Around noon works best for most.
tip: Turn it down if quiet notes are triggering resamples too often; up if you're struggling to trigger it.
show text from manual
Sets how easily your playing dynamics trigger Onward to sample. Accessed by holding both footswitches until the LEDs turn green.
BALANCE (hidden — behind MIX)
Sets the volume balance between the Glitch and Freeze sides so one doesn't drown out the other.
tip: Nudge toward Freeze for background pads under a prominent glitch loop, or vice versa.
show text from manual
Adjusts the relative loudness of the two channels (G = Glitch louder, F = Freeze louder), centered is even.
DUCK DEPTH (hidden — behind OCTAVE)
Once you've turned on DUCK or SIDECHAIN, this sets how much and how easily the effect dips in volume.
tip: Only matters when DUCK or SIDECHAIN is engaged — dial it for how dramatic the pumping/ducking feels.
show text from manual
Controls the sensitivity and intensity of the ducking and sidechain effects.
USER (hidden — behind SUSTAIN)
Lets you program your own preferred fade-in/out speed and park it on the middle FADE position, so you can flick between slow, your-custom, and fast.
tip: Set it to a medium speed you use often so all three FADE positions become useful.
show text from manual
Sets the custom fade speed used by the middle (USER) position of the FADE toggle.
ERROR BLEND (hidden — behind ERROR)
Instead of just one flavor of glitch, this lets all three types (Timing, Condition, Playback) happen at once for maximum unpredictability.
tip: Turn it up with ERROR for the 'anything can go wrong' UH OH setting where every kind of glitch is equally likely.
show text from manual
Blends in the two error types you didn't select with the TYPE toggle, so you can get a mix of all three. ERROR still controls overall chance; this sets how likely an error is one of the unselected types.
EQ (hidden — behind TEXTURE)
A tone knob hiding behind TEXTURE. Turn it up to thin out a muddy sound, or down to darken and mellow a harsh one.
tip: Use it to make the effect sit in a mix — thin it out so pads don't clash with your bass frequencies.
show text from manual
A simple tone control: clockwise removes low frequencies (thins/brightens), counter-clockwise removes highs (darkens).
Switches & toggles
TYPE
Picks the flavor of chaos. Left = rhythmic/pattern-like variation. Middle = natural pops, dropouts and gritty bites (best for lifelike glitches). Right = random speed changes, 2x/4x, and reverse.
tip: The middle (Condition) setting is the easiest way to make Glitch pop in and out naturally instead of repeating steadily. Set it to Playback on a Freeze pad for generative pitch-shifting drones.
show text from manual
Selects which of three error behaviors the ERROR knob produces: TIMING (left) changes sample size, CONDITION (middle) introduces mutes and sample-rate shifts, PLAYBACK (right) destabilizes playback speed and direction.
FADE
Controls whether sounds appear instantly or swell in gently. Left = ambient, swelling, with brief moments of layering as old and new samples overlap. Right = snappy and responsive. Middle = whatever custom speed you programmed.
tip: At slower FADE settings you get fleeting overlaps where the old and new samples momentarily blend — lovely for pads. Set it fast to avoid those extra layers.
show text from manual
Sets how quickly sounds fade in and out (and the crossfade time between old and new samples): SLOW (left) is soft and swelling, USER (middle) is a custom value set in Hidden Options, FAST (right) is immediate.
ANIMATE
Adds movement and sway. Left gives pitch wobble/vibrato that speeds up or slows with SIZE — can sound vintage or dissonant. Right gives lush, hazy chorus for width and dimension. Middle is off.
tip: Chorus is fixed slow and dreamy; if you want the modulation speed to follow your timing, use vibrato and control its rate with SIZE.
show text from manual
Engages modulation: VIBRATO (left, rate set by the SIZE knob), OFF (middle), or CHORUS (right, fixed slow atmospheric rate).
PRESETS toggle
A three-way preset switcher. Flick left or right to instantly recall a saved sound; keep it centered to play with the knobs live. Dip switch settings are saved into presets too.
tip: To factory-reset all Hidden Options, flick this toggle left and back to center three times, then press both footswitches together when the lights blink.
show text from manual
Left and right positions each recall a stored preset; middle is 'live' (your current knob/switch settings). Saving: hold the right footswitch 3 seconds then add the left footswitch 3 more seconds to save to the right slot (start with the left footswitch for the left slot). The middle LED blinks to confirm.
Routing toggles: TYPE / FADE / ANIMATE (in Hidden Options)
This is Onward's secret weapon: you can send the errors to only the Glitch side while keeping Freeze smooth, or put all the effects on Freeze while errors animate Glitch. Point each toggle toward the channel you want to affect.
tip: When routed to only one channel, the other channel behaves as: stable (no errors), or infinite sustain + fast fade, or completely clean — letting you run Onward like two separate effects.
show text from manual
While in Hidden Options, these three toggles isolate their sections to one channel. TYPE routes Error, FADE routes Shape (SUSTAIN+FADE), ANIMATE routes Effects (OCTAVE, TEXTURE, ANIMATE, EQ). Left = Glitch only, middle = both, right = Freeze only.
Footswitches
GLITCH footswitch
Turns the repeating-chunk channel on or off. Once you've played something you love, press and hold it to freeze that phrase in place so you can solo over a steady loop while it no longer swaps out your samples.
tip: With the LATCH dip switch on (the default), the hold-to-lock becomes latching — it stays locked until you hold again. Hold this switch while powering up to enable Dry Kill for wet/dry rigs.
show text from manual
Tap to engage the Glitch effect. Hold to lock and preserve the current sample so it stops resampling.
FREEZE footswitch
Turns the sustaining-pad channel on or off. Hold it to lock the current frozen note into an infinite pad — the classic freeze — so new notes you play don't replace it.
tip: Hold this switch while powering up to enable Trails, so the effect fades out gracefully when you bypass instead of cutting off abruptly.
show text from manual
Tap to engage the Freeze effect. Hold to lock and preserve the current sample.
Display & indicators
Status LEDs
Your visual feedback. Red = active. Green = you've locked a sample or you're editing hidden settings. Blinking-red-everywhere = you're in tap tempo mode.
tip: The middle LED blinking is your confirmation that a preset save or a reset succeeded.
show text from manual
Indicate effect state and mode. Red indicates the effect is on; green indicates a locked/preserved sample or that you're in Hidden Options; all LEDs blinking red means tap-tempo mode.
Side panels
Switches & toggles
MISO dip switch
Turn this on if you're feeding Onward a single mono cable but want stereo out of two outputs.
tip: Combine with SPREAD for genuinely different processing on each side rather than just a duplicated signal.
show text from manual
Mono In, Stereo Out — splits a mono input signal into a stereo output.
SPREAD dip switch
Makes Onward wide and immersive in stereo. Errors will bounce between left and right for an animated stereo image.
tip: Turn ERROR up to actually hear the stereo motion — with SPREAD on but no errors, there's little movement to spread.
show text from manual
Turns on stereo processing: a widening effect on both channels plus stereo movement tied to the Error effects.
LATCH dip switch
Lets you lock a sample without keeping your foot down — press and hold once to lock, press and hold again to release.
tip: This is on from the factory; turn it off if you prefer the lock to only last while your foot is pressing.
show text from manual
Changes each footswitch's hold function from momentary to latching, so a held action stays engaged until you hold again.
SIDECHAIN dip switch
Makes the pad 'breathe' or pump in rhythm with the glitch loop, giving a linked, alternating groove between the two channels.
tip: Use it even without Glitch engaged to add rhythmic pulsing to an otherwise static freeze pad — SIZE sets the pulse speed.
show text from manual
Engages a pumping effect on the Freeze channel: Freeze momentarily dips in volume whenever the Glitch resets. Also works with Glitch off to make Freeze rhythmic (speed set by SIZE).
DUCK dip switch
Automatically lowers the effect so your fresh notes stay clear and audible, then lets the effect swell back up in the gaps. Keeps things from getting muddy.
tip: Adjust the DUCK DEPTH hidden option (behind the OCTAVE knob) to set how sensitive and strong the ducking is.
show text from manual
Engages dynamic ducking on both channels — Onward's sounds dip in volume whenever you play something new at the input.
REVERSE dip switch
Plays your captured Glitch chunks backwards for a swelling, backwards-tape feel.
tip: Great combined with slow FADE for reverse-swell textures.
show text from manual
Causes the Glitch side to play in reverse.
½ SPEED dip switch
Turn this on if your Glitch samples feel too short — you get roughly twice the length at the cost of a slightly grainy, lo-fi sound.
tip: The lo-fi character it adds is a feature, not just a compromise — it pairs nicely with TEXTURE crunch for tape-like textures.
show text from manual
Cuts the Glitch recording quality in half, doubling the effective SIZE (longer samples) and adding a lo-fi quality.
MANUAL dip switch
Turns Onward into a traditional foot-controlled freeze/looper. It stops listening to your dynamics and only grabs a sample when you tell it to with your foot.
tip: Use this when you want precise, deliberate control over exactly when each channel captures — it lets you sample each channel independently.
show text from manual
Deactivates dynamic (auto-sampling) control. Instead: tap a footswitch to sample new audio, hold to hold infinitely (ignoring SUSTAIN), double-tap to disengage.
SIZE / ERROR / SUSTAIN / TEXTURE / OCTAVE ramp dip switches
Flip one of these on to make that knob move by itself — either sweeping once at power-up (ramp) or continuously back and forth (bounce). The physical knob position sets the top or bottom of the range.
tip: Turn on more than one at a time to automate several parameters together for complex evolving textures.
show text from manual
Each engages ramping/automation for its matching knob. Turning any on hands the MIX knob over to control ramp speed.
BOUNCE dip switch
Sets the automation to keep oscillating forever rather than moving once and stopping. This is the easier one to start experimenting with.
tip: Start with BOUNCE, pick a knob (like TEXTURE), and set the speed with MIX to hear constant morphing between two settings.
show text from manual
When on, ramping becomes continuous back-and-forth motion (bounce) instead of a one-time ramp.
SWEEP dip switch
Decides which end of the sweep your physical knob position defines — the ceiling or the floor of the movement.
tip: Flip it to reverse the direction of your ramp/bounce without changing anything else.
show text from manual
Selects whether the knob's set position is the TOP (T) or BOTTOM (B) of the automated range.
POLARITY dip switch
Flips whether the automation or pedal moves up or down as it sweeps or as you press an expression pedal.
tip: If your expression pedal or CV is working backwards from what you expect, flip this.
show text from manual
Sets the polarity/direction (R/F) for ramping and external CV/expression control.
Jacks & connectors
EXP/CV jack
Plug in an expression pedal or CV source to control parameters with your foot or an external device. Choose which knob(s) it controls with the dip switches, just like ramping.
tip: Never feed it more than 5V or any negative voltage — that can damage the pedal. Stay within 0–5V CV range.
show text from manual
Accepts a control-voltage (0–5V) or expression signal to control Onward's knobs. Set up like ramping via the dip switches; CV needs a floating-ring TRS-to-TS cable, expression needs a TRS cable. If no knobs are selected, it controls MIX.
MIDI / EXT GLITCH jack
This jack does double duty: it's your gateway to deep MIDI control, or you can plug an external footswitch in to engage Glitch remotely — handy for tabletop/desk setups.
tip: An external footswitch takes control automatically the moment it's plugged in — no menu diving required.
show text from manual
Connects MIDI (via a Chase Bliss MIDIbox to a 1/4" TRS jack) for full control including clock sync, Hidden Options and dip switches. Alternatively, plug in a normally-open momentary footswitch to trigger the Glitch effect externally.
Power jack
Where you plug in power. It must be a standard pedal 9V center-negative supply that can deliver at least 200mA.
tip: Onward does not run on a battery — use a quality isolated supply to avoid noise.
show text from manual
Accepts 9V DC center-negative power, minimum 200mA.
What it is
A stereo phrase-sampling and looping guitar/effects pedal that captures audio for on-the-fly manipulation and playback.
The Chase Bliss Onward is a dual dynamic sampling/glitch/freeze pedal for guitar (or any instrument). Instead of just processing your sound, it listens to what you play, grabs little snapshots of it, and turns those snapshots into evolving pads, repeating loops, harmonies, and glitchy dreamscapes that shift as you play. It's designed so that gentle playing produces gentle results and aggressive playing produces wilder ones — it 'moves when you do.' Sounds don't stack up like a normal looper; each new note you play replaces the last captured sample, so the effect is always changing and moving forward. (You can lock a sample in place if you want it to stay.)
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Plug your 9V DC center-negative supply (200mA or more) into the power jack, guitar into input, amp/interface into output. If your device uses two mono jacks for stereo, use a TRS-to-dual-TS cable.
- 02For a first session, leave all the top dip switches OFF except LATCH (the factory default). This avoids surprises.
- 03Tap the FREEZE footswitch (right side) on and play a single note — you should hear a soft floating pad. Play a few more notes and notice how the pad follows you.
- 04Tap the GLITCH footswitch (left side) on and play a short phrase. Leave a gap of silence, then listen to how Onward repeats and reshapes what you played.
- 05When you hear a Glitch phrase you like, hold the GLITCH footswitch down to lock it — now you can solo over a repeating loop while Freeze still follows your new notes.
- 06Turn OCTAVE up (to the right) to add a shimmering higher harmony, or down (to the left) for a lower one. Leave it at noon to disable it.
- 07Turn TEXTURE down from noon (to the left) for lo-fi digital crunch, or up (to the right) for warm overdrive. Noon is clean.
- 08Flick the ANIMATE toggle to the right for slow dreamy chorus, or left for vibrato wobble, to add movement.
- 09Turn ERROR up slowly to introduce random glitches, dropouts and pitch shifts — this is where things get beautifully broken.
- 10Adjust MIX to taste (dry vs. effect) and SIZE to change how long the samples and timing are.
How the sound flows
Your dry signal enters and is sent to two parallel channels that both sample your audio at the same time but into separate memory. The GLITCH channel captures short chunks (up to one second) and repeats them; the FREEZE channel captures a moment and sustains it into a pad. Inside each channel the captured sound passes through the EFFECT section (OCTAVE harmony, TEXTURE grit/EQ, ANIMATE modulation), the SHAPE section (SUSTAIN hold time and FADE in/out time), and the ERROR section (randomized glitches). The MIX knob then blends the processed result against your dry signal on the way to the output. By default every section affects both channels, but the three toggles can route Error, Shape, and Effects to only one channel each. Output can be mono, stereo, or mono-split-to-stereo.
Questions owners actually ask
Why does my sound keep changing/replacing itself instead of building up like a looper?+
That's by design — Onward is a dynamic effect, not a stacking looper. Every time it detects you playing, it captures a fresh sample and replaces the old one on that channel. If you want a sound to stay, hold down that channel's footswitch to lock it, then you can play over it freely. Or turn on the MANUAL dip switch so it only samples when you tap the footswitch.
How do I get the classic 'freeze pad' that holds forever?+
Turn on the FREEZE footswitch, play a note, then hold the FREEZE footswitch down to lock it into an infinite pad. Alternatively, set the SUSTAIN knob to maximum, which gives infinite sustain until you resample. Add a little ERROR to bring subtle motion to the otherwise static pad.
What does OCTAVE do at noon, and why don't I hear a harmony?+
At exactly noon OCTAVE is disabled — that's the off position. Turn left for a lower octave voice or right for a higher octave voice. The further from noon, the more prominent the harmony. Same idea applies to TEXTURE: noon means no distortion.
I turned on a ramping dip switch and now my MIX knob doesn't blend anymore — is it broken?+
No — that's normal. As soon as any ramping dip switch is engaged, the MIX knob is repurposed to control ramp/bounce speed. You can still adjust the wet/dry blend by holding down the left footswitch while turning MIX. Turn the ramping dip switch back off to restore MIX to normal.
How do I save and recall presets?+
The middle mini-toggle switches between two saved presets (left/right) and a live position (center). To save to the right slot: hold the right footswitch for 3 seconds, then also hold the left footswitch for another 3 seconds. For the left slot, start by holding the left footswitch. The middle LED blinks to confirm the save. Your dip switch settings are stored in the preset too.
Can I run Onward as two separate effects at once?+
Yes. Hold both footswitches to enter Hidden Options, then use the TYPE, FADE, and ANIMATE toggles to route the Error, Shape, and Effect sections to just one channel each. For example, send all the errors to the Glitch side and all the smoothing/effects to the Freeze side (the 'Complex Couple' idea) — the two channels then behave like two complementary effects in one box.
How do I set up a wet/dry (parallel) rig?+
Hold down the GLITCH footswitch while powering the pedal on to enable Dry Kill, which removes the dry signal from the output. This preference is remembered. Separately, hold FREEZE at power-up to enable Trails so the effect fades gracefully when bypassed.
Is there a tap tempo, and does it sync to my DAW?+
Yes. Tap both footswitches twice to enter tap tempo mode (all LEDs blink red), tap in your tempo with the left footswitch, and exit with the right footswitch. For full MIDI clock sync you'll need a Chase Bliss MIDIbox connected to the MIDI/EXT GLITCH jack — when clock-synced, the SIZE knob selects the rhythmic subdivision.
