Knobs
Matrix encoder
This is the single control you use to build and adjust every connection on the wiring board. Spin it to move to the crossing point you want, click to 'open' that connection, then spin again to set how much effect it has — including negative amounts that push the opposite direction. Hold it down for a couple of seconds to erase a connection.
tip: To create an assignable destination, click into an Assign column point, then hold the matching Assign button (1, 2 or 3) and turn the knob you want to control — the display confirms the target. Subtlety usually wins: small amounts add expression, while full-force modulation often sounds crude.

A push-and-turn knob dedicated to the Matrix. Turning it scrolls the selection LED through all 35 patch points (wrapping around at the end); pressing it enters edit mode for the selected point, where turning sets a bipolar modulation amount and the display inverts to black-on-white. Holding it pressed for two seconds clears the selected point and resets its amount to zero.
Preset encoder
This is how you flip through sounds. Spin it to move through the library. Be careful: normally, moving to a new preset throws away any tweaks you made to the one you were on, without warning. It's also a fast eraser — click it three times in a row to wipe the current sound back to blank so you can start fresh.
tip: Turn on Utility > Browsing > Click to Load so you can audition presets while keeping your unsaved edits until you deliberately click. When naming a preset, push-and-turn edits a character in place, and holding Shift while turning jumps quickly through character ranges.

A push-and-turn knob next to the display used to browse and load the 256 preset slots (128 factory, 128 initially empty 'Init' presets, all overwritable). Turning scrolls presets; by default a new preset loads immediately, discarding unsaved edits, unless 'Click to Load' is enabled in Utility, in which case you scroll freely and click to load. Pressing it three times quickly resets the current preset to its empty Init state.
Master Volume knob
This is the overall loudness for the whole synth — it turns everything up or down at once, whether you're listening through headphones or a speaker. It's a straightforward volume knob and nothing more.
tip: Because this is a global control, use it to set a comfortable playing level, but adjust per-sound loudness elsewhere: Utility > Preset > Preset Volume lets you make one patch relatively louder or quieter (-12 to +12) so presets match in a set.

Sets the global output level of the MicroFreak, affecting both the line output and the headphone output simultaneously. It is one of only two controls that cannot be used as a Matrix modulation destination (the other being the Preset encoder).
Glide knob
This makes notes swoop into each other instead of jumping cleanly. Turned up, moving from one key to another glides the pitch like a slide guitar or a singer bending between notes. Fully left, pitches change instantly. It's great for expressive leads and basslines.
tip: For extra expression, make Glide a Matrix destination and modulate it with keyboard Pressure — press harder to add more slide. In Sync mode with the LFO controlling Glide, you can make glide switch on and off every other sequencer step for rhythmic slides.

Sets the portamento amount — the time or rate for pitch to slide smoothly from one note to the next. Fully counter-clockwise means no glide (instant pitch changes); clockwise increases it, up to roughly 4 seconds to travel the keyboard's two-octave span (the range extends to about 10 seconds). The behavior is set in Utility > Preset > Glide Mode: Time (fixed duration), Sync (locked to tempo divisions like 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 up to 1/1), or Rate (relative to Arp/Seq rate).
Type knob (Digital Oscillator)
This is the big choice: it swaps out the entire sound-generating personality of the synth. One setting gives you classic analog-style waves, another gives you spoken words, another plucked strings, another chords, another metallic bell tones. Turning it while playing walks you through completely different flavors of sound. The display shows a picture of whichever engine you land on.
tip: Because Type only changes when a fresh note starts, modulating it with the LFO or Arpeggiator creates abrupt, glitchy engine-hopping timbre changes between notes rather than smooth morphing. Try that for chaotic, unpredictable textures.

Selects the oscillator's synthesis model. The MicroFreak offers many engines including Basic Waves, Superwave, Wavetable, Harmonic, KarplusStrong, and the Mutable Instruments-derived Plaits models: PI.VA (classic waveforms), PI.Waveshapr (waveshaping/fold), PI.FM (two-operator FM), PI.Grain (granular formant), PI.Chords, PI.Speech (vowel/speech), and PI.Modal (modal resonator). Type can also be modulated in the Matrix, though it only updates the model when a new note is triggered, not while a note is held.
Wave knob (Digital Oscillator)
Think of this as the main tone-tweaker for whatever engine you picked. What it does changes depending on the engine, but it's always the biggest character control after Type. The display tells you exactly what it's changing as you turn it, so watch the screen. On the chord engine it picks the chord; on the speech engine it picks the word.
tip: Modulating Wave with the LFO or Cycling Envelope is one of the most rewarding tricks on the MicroFreak. On the Wavetable engine this is called wavesequencing; on PI.Chords, modulating Wave with the LFO random wave (set strength 50–100) gives instant evolving chord changes.

Adjusts the first of three sound-shaping parameters for the currently selected oscillator model; its exact function depends on the Type. Examples: in Basic Waves it morphs square to sawtooth; in Superwave it picks which waveform gets multiplied; in Wavetable it selects one of 16 waves; in PI.Chords it selects the chord (Octave, 5th, sus4, minor variants, major variants, etc.); in PI.Speech it scans formants then libraries of colors, numbers, letters and words. In the Plaits models it corresponds to the parameter Mutable calls 'Harmonics'. Wave is available as a modulation destination in the Matrix.
Timbre knob (Digital Oscillator)
This is the second tone control for your chosen engine, and like Wave it does something different for each one. Often it adds thickness, movement or brightness. On FM it controls how clangy and metallic the sound gets; on the chord engine it flips the chord notes around into different voicings; on the speech engine it shifts the voice up or down.
tip: On engines that detune (like Superwave, Timbre = detune amount), small amounts give a lush, fat chorus-like richness while large amounts get wild and dissonant.

Shape knob (Digital Oscillator)
The third and final tuning knob for your chosen engine, usually adding the finishing touch—extra width, a chorus shimmer, more sustain, or extra harmonics. As always, the display shows what it's actually doing for the current engine.
tip: On the Modal engine, Shape controls how long the sound rings out (damping/decay). In paraphonic mode, modulating it lets you selectively mute or sustain individual notes of an arpeggio or sequence.

Cutoff knob (Analog Filter)
This is the tone-brightness dial and probably the knob you'll grab most. In Low Pass mode, turning it down makes the sound progressively darker and muffled until it disappears; turning up opens it bright and full. In High Pass mode it works the opposite way. It's the classic 'wah' and 'sweep' control of any synth.
tip: Cutoff comes alive when moved automatically rather than by hand—let the Envelope (via Filter Amt), the LFO, or a sequencer modulation track sweep it. For a manual filter-sweep test, set Cutoff low, Resonance high, Amp Mod on, and dial in a slow attack/long decay on the envelope.

Sets the cutoff frequency—the point where the filter starts acting. Range runs from roughly 30Hz fully counter-clockwise to over 15kHz fully clockwise. Its meaning depends on the filter Type set by the Type button. The main Envelope is hardwired to modulate cutoff via the Filter Amt knob, and cutoff also appears as a fixed Matrix destination.
Resonance knob (Analog Filter)
This adds a whistling, ringing emphasis right at the point where the filter is cutting. A little gives the sweep a vocal, singing quality; a lot makes it scream and ring. Pushed to the maximum the filter starts making its own pure tone even with no oscillator.
tip: Max the resonance and the self-oscillating filter becomes a clean sine-wave source—handy since the Basic Waves engine has no dedicated sine. Also great for accenting individual beats in an arpeggio when you modulate it from a sequencer track.

Also called Emphasis or Q. Boosts the frequencies right around the cutoff point by feeding the filter's output back into itself, creating a resonant peak. Turned fully clockwise the filter self-oscillates, producing a pure sine tone; in Band Pass mode maximum resonance narrows the passband and can block the oscillator entirely while ringing as a sine oscillator. Resonance is available as an assignable Matrix modulation destination.
Rise knob (Cycling Envelope)
This controls how quickly the Cycling Envelope's swell builds up. Short means an instant jump; long means a slow fade-in. Since the Cycling Envelope can loop, at very short settings it becomes a shape you can use like a second LFO. Hold Shift and turn it to change the curve from gentle-then-fast to fast-then-gentle.
tip: Set Rise, Fall and Hold all very low and switch to Loop or Run mode to turn the Cycling Envelope into a fast, custom-shaped extra LFO—then modulate its Rise time with the real LFO for constantly shifting waveforms.

Sets the rise (attack) time of the Cycling Envelope—the time the envelope takes to climb to maximum after being triggered. In Env mode it acts like a normal attack stage; in Run and Loop modes it shapes the up-slope of the repeating cycle. Holding Shift while turning Rise sets the shape of the rise stage: turn left for logarithmic, right for exponential, with a linear dead zone in the middle (the screen shows 'LINEAR'). Rise is available as a Matrix modulation destination.
Fall knob (Cycling Envelope)
This controls how quickly the Cycling Envelope's swell dies away. Short gives a snappy, percussive drop; long gives a slow, gradual fade. Combined with Rise it defines the whole up-and-down shape of the cycle. Hold Shift and turn it to bend the curve for a more aggressive or more relaxed tail.
tip: Feeding the LFO's rising sawtooth into the Fall time adds realistic variation to drum- and bell-like decays. Remember a logarithmic rise plus exponential fall feels sluggish, while the reverse feels punchy and eager.

Sets the fall time of the Cycling Envelope—how long it takes to drop back to zero. In standard Env mode this is the release after you let go of a key; in Run and Loop modes it sets the down-slope of the repeating cycle before it retriggers. Holding Shift while turning Fall sets the shape of the fall stage: left for logarithmic, right for exponential, linear in the middle. Fall is available as a Matrix modulation destination.
Hold knob (Cycling Envelope)
This sets how long the Cycling Envelope stays at full before it starts falling. In the looping modes, a longer Hold keeps the sound sitting at its peak for a beat before dropping, changing the rhythm and shape of the repeating cycle. In normal mode it acts as the sustain level while you hold a key.
tip: When using the Cycling Envelope as a repeating LFO-like source, adjusting Hold reshapes the waveform's flat-top duration—a small Hold makes a pointier peak, a longer Hold makes a plateau, useful for gating or pulsing effects.

Sets the Hold/Sustain stage of the Cycling Envelope, which sits between the Rise and Fall stages. In Env mode the level is held as long as a key is pressed (functioning as sustain level); in Run and Loop modes Hold sets how long the envelope stays at its peak before beginning the Fall stage. Hold is available as a Matrix modulation destination.
Amount knob (Cycling Envelope)
This is the master volume knob for the Cycling Envelope's 'move'. Turn it up and the envelope pushes harder on whatever it's controlling (pitch, filter, wave, etc.); turn it down and the effect gets gentler. If it's set to zero, the Cycling Envelope does nothing no matter how you shape it.
tip: When you're using the Cycling Envelope on the analog filter, small amounts often sound best — sending too much or too little is the difference between an average and a fantastic sound. Try modulating this Amount knob itself with the LFO or pressure for evolving depth.

Sets how strongly the Cycling Envelope's output affects whatever destinations it's routed to on the Matrix. It acts as an attenuator on the Cycling Envelope signal, scaling the overall depth of the modulation it sends out. It's also available as a modulation destination in the Matrix (CYCLING Envelope AMOUNT).
Rate knob (Arpeggiator/Sequencer)
This is the tempo dial for your arpeggios and sequences — turn right for faster, left for slower. Push it in to lock to a clock so it stays in time with your other gear, or leave it free to set your own beats-per-minute.
tip: Hold Shift and turn this knob to add swing for a looser, groovier feel. During step recording, turning it 'scrubs' through your sequence step by step so you can find and edit individual steps.

Sets the playback speed of the Arpeggiator or Sequencer. Unsynced it displays BPM (default 120.0). Pressing it toggles Sync; when synced it locks to the internal or external clock and shows note divisions from 1 whole note down to 1/32 triplet. Holding Shift while turning sets a swing amount (50–75%).
Rate knob (LFO)
Controls how fast the LFO's wobble moves — from a slow drift taking many seconds, up to fast enough to sound almost like a tone. Push the knob in to lock the speed to your song's tempo so the wobble stays in rhythm.
tip: When synced, values like 1/4 mean one LFO cycle per quarter note — handy for tremolo and filter sweeps that stay locked to the beat. To make the LFO restart cleanly with every note, turn on Utility>Preset>LFO Retrig.

Sets the LFO speed from 0.06 Hz up to 100 Hz (default 1 Hz when unsynced). Pressing the knob toggles Sync: when off, the value shows in Hz; when on, the LFO locks proportionally to the MicroFreak or DAW clock and displays as divisions from 8/1 down to 1/32, including triplet values.
Attack knob (Envelope)
Controls how quickly the sound (or the filter opening) fades in when you press a key. Fully counter-clockwise gives an instant, snappy start like an organ or pluck. Turn it up and the note swells in gradually, like a bowed string section that takes a moment to reach full volume.
tip: Keep it near zero for percussive, bass and lead sounds so they hit right on time; dial in longer attacks (a second or more) for pads and evolving textures. You can also make it a modulation destination in the Matrix (via an Assign slot) so pressure or the LFO can vary the attack per note.

Sets the Attack time of the main (Standard) Envelope Generator, from 0 ms to 10 seconds. This is the time the envelope takes to rise from zero to its maximum level after a key is pressed. By default the envelope controls the filter cutoff, and it also controls volume when the Amp Mod button is lit.
Decay/Release knob (Envelope)
Controls how fast the sound settles down after the initial hit, and how long it takes to die away once you lift your finger. Short settings give tight, plucky, percussive notes; long settings let notes ring out and fade slowly after you let go.
tip: Note that on the MicroFreak decay and release share one knob, so you can't set them independently. For drum and bell-like sounds, use a short-to-medium setting with a low Sustain. Modulating this with the rising Saw wave of the LFO adds realism to percussive sounds.

Sets the Decay/Release time of the main Envelope, from 0 ms to 13 seconds. This is the time the envelope takes to fall from the peak (end of Attack) down to the Sustain level, and also the time it takes to fall to zero after you release the key.
Sustain knob (Envelope)
Sets how loud (or how open the filter stays) while you keep holding a key down. Turn it high and notes stay full and steady as long as you hold them, like an organ. Turn it low and the note drops to a quiet level (or silence) right after the initial hit, which is what you want for plucks and drums.
tip: If Sustain is set to maximum, the Decay knob has no audible effect because there's nothing left to decay to. Set it low for percussive patches and high for sustained pads, leads and drones.

Sets the Sustain level of the main Envelope. This is the level the envelope holds at after the Decay stage, for as long as a key (or gate) is held. Because Sustain is a level rather than a time, the MicroFreak envelope is technically an ADS envelope.
Filter Amt knob (Envelope)
Decides how strongly the envelope opens (or closes) the filter as a note plays, which shapes how bright the sound gets and how that brightness changes over time. This is the knob that creates the classic 'filter sweep' where a note starts bright and mellows out, or starts dark and blooms open.
tip: Because it's bipolar, turning it one way makes the filter open with the envelope and the other way makes it close. Try Cutoff low, Resonance high, and Filter Amt around 70 with a long attack and decay to hear a dramatic sweep. You can fine-tune this same amount directly on the Matrix if you prefer.

Sets how much of the main Envelope's output is routed to the Filter cutoff frequency. This is a hardwired connection; turning the knob lights the corresponding Envelope-to-Cutoff point on the Matrix. The control is bipolar, so it can sweep the cutoff up or down.

Matrix (modulation patch grid)
This is the wiring board that decides what wobbles, sweeps, or shapes what. Instead of physical cables, you pick a point where a 'mover' (like the LFO) meets a 'thing to move' (like pitch or filter), and dial in how strongly it happens. It's how you create vibrato, filter sweeps, evolving textures, and much weirder effects — without any patch cords.
tip: Destinations 1–4 are fixed (Pitch, Wave, Timbre, Cutoff), but slots 5, 6 and 7 (Assign1–3) can target almost any knob on the synth — everything except Master Volume and the Preset encoder. You can even route a source to the 'Matrix Modulation Amount' of another point, meaning you can modulate a modulation (for example, use the Cycling Envelope to fade vibrato in and out).

A 5-row by 7-column grid of 35 patch points that connects modulation sources (rows: Cycling Envelope, Envelope, LFO, Pressure, Key/Arp) to destinations (columns: Pitch, Wave, Timbre, Cutoff, plus three assignable slots). Each intersection has a bipolar attenuator, so modulation can be positive or negative. A moving LED indicator shows which point is selected, and LED states report status: off means no routing (or amount at zero), on means a routing exists, blinking means you're editing that connection's strength.
OLED display
This little screen is your constant guide — it tells you what you're doing the moment you touch anything. Turn a knob and it names what's changing and shows the value; pick an oscillator and it draws a picture of it. It removes most of the guesswork from a synth that otherwise hides a lot under the hood.
tip: Watch it closely when editing the Matrix: it names the exact parameter you're assigning (for example, 'parameter 3 of the oscillator' is Shape) and shows the modulation strength as you dial it, which is the only reliable way to know what an Assign slot is actually controlling.

A low-power OLED screen that shows contextual information: the name and category of the current preset, real-time feedback on any knob you turn or button you press, graphic representations of the selected oscillator Type and its parameter values, Matrix connection info and modulation amounts, sequencer step data, LFO sync ratios, and Utility menu settings.
Other
Touch strip
This is the flat, wheel-free strip you slide or tap your finger along. Depending on which icon you've selected, it either controls how wild your rhythm gets (Spice/Dice) or bends the pitch of your notes (Bend). Because it senses exactly where you touch, you can jump instantly to any value instead of gradually sweeping to it like a wheel.
tip: You can play the strip dynamically — tapping various positions on the fly rather than just sliding — which is what makes it far more expressive than a traditional pitch wheel.

A capacitive ribbon controller above the keyboard that performs one of three functions at a time, chosen by the Spice, Dice, or Bend icons next to it. It responds to finger position and can be tapped at different points for dynamic control. For Spice/Dice it sets randomization intensity and rolls new rhythmic variations; for Bend it acts as a position-sensitive pitch bender.
Touch capacitive keyboard (25 keys)
Instead of keys that move up and down, these are flat pads that sense your finger. Pressing a key both plays a note and, as you roll more of your fingertip onto it, sends out an expressive 'pressure' signal you can route to control almost anything — like brightness, vibrato, or volume. You choose in the menus whether the keys respond to how hard/how much finger you use (pressure) or how fast you strike (velocity).
tip: If your fingers are dry and the keyboard feels unresponsive, lick your fingertip — seriously, the manual suggests it, since the keyboard works by sensing skin contact. Because pressure settings save per-preset, you can make two identical presets with different keyboard responses for a live set. Clean the keys with a soft damp cloth (no abrasives).

A 25-key touch-sensitive capacitive keyboard (no moving keys) spanning two octaves, extendable via the Octave buttons. Each touch generates a gate, a pitch, and a pressure (or velocity) signal, selectable at Utility>Preset>Press mode. The larger the finger contact area, the higher the pressure value — finger surface alone reaches about 30% of the range, with added pressure reaching 100%. These signals are available in the Matrix and at the rear Pitch/Gate/Pressure outputs. It can also act as a polyphonic MIDI controller.

Switches & toggles
Power switch
This is simply the on/off button, tucked into the panel so it isn't bumped by accident. It turns the whole instrument on and off whether you're powering it from the wall or over USB.
tip: Following good practice, power up your audio system in order — turn the MicroFreak on before your amplifier or speakers, and turn it off after them, to avoid pops. Because it's recessed, you can leave cables connected and just flip this switch to shut down.

A recessed switch on the rear panel that toggles the unit between OFF and ON (USB power or DC power). It lets you power down without unplugging the USB cable. When both DC and USB are connected, DC is used; switching to DC power causes the MicroFreak to reset.
Jacks & connectors
Headphone output (1/8" TRS)
This is where you plug in headphones. Even though most headphones are stereo, MicroFreak only makes mono sound, so both ears get exactly the same thing — that's normal, not a fault.
tip: Use this for quiet practice, but remember the Master Volume affects both this and the line output, so set levels carefully to protect your ears.

A standard 3.5mm (1/8") TS or TRS jack for headphones. The output signal is monaural — plugging in stereo headphones simply sends the identical sound to both left and right sides. Its level is controlled by the Master Volume knob.
Line output (6.35mm TRS)
This is the main output you run to your mixer, audio interface, or amp. It's mono like everything else on the MicroFreak. Because it's a balanced output, using the right kind of cable gives you a cleaner, quieter signal.
tip: Use a TRS (balanced) cable here rather than a standard TS instrument cable — the manual specifically notes it improves the signal-to-noise ratio, meaning less hiss, especially over longer cable runs.

A 6.35mm (1/4") TRS jack providing a monaural, balanced/symmetrical line-level output for connecting to an amplifier or mixer. Using a TRS (balanced) cable improves the signal-to-noise ratio versus a TS cable.
Pitch (CV) output
This sends out an electrical 'note number' so MicroFreak can play the pitch of external analog synthesizers and modular gear that don't understand MIDI. As you play higher notes, the voltage rises, telling the other synth to play higher too.
tip: If an external oscillator won't track in tune, check the pitch format setting — most gear (Eurorack, Arturia Brutes) wants 1V/octave, but some vintage synths need Hz/V or Buchla's 1.2V/octave. The manual recommends ferrite-equipped CV cables to reduce noise.

A control-voltage output that transmits the pitch of the currently played/sequenced note to external analog gear such as Eurorack modules or Arturia's Brute-series synths. By default it follows the 1V/octave standard, but can be set to Hz/V or 1.2V/octave (Buchla) in Utility or the MIDI Control Center. The 0V/1V reference note is also configurable. Only one pitch CV is output, so on chords the lowest note is sent.
Gate output
This tells an external synth or module WHEN a note starts and stops — like a switch that turns 'on' when you press a key and 'off' when you release it. The pitch output says which note; this Gate output says 'play now, stop now.'
tip: If your external gear triggers backwards or not at all, switch the gate format — older gear often needs S-Trig, while most modern modular expects V-Trig at 5V or 12V.

A control output that sends a Gate signal — high on Note On, low on Note Off — to trigger envelopes or other events on external devices. Its format can be set to S-Trig, V-Trig 5V, or V-Trig 12V in Utility or the MIDI Control Center to match the connected gear.
Pressure output
This sends out your finger-expression from the keyboard as a control voltage, so you can use how hard or how much you press to open a filter, sweep a sequencer's speed, or shape a sound on external analog gear. Whether it sends pressure or velocity depends on your keyboard mode setting.
tip: You can dial the maximum voltage from 1V up to 10V, but note that not all Eurorack modules can handle 10V — some will clip if the voltage goes too high, so start lower if a destination behaves oddly.

A control output that sends either a pressure (aftertouch) voltage or a velocity voltage depending on Utility>Preset>Press mode. The output voltage range is adjustable from 1V to 10V via Utility>CV/Gate>Pressure Range or the MIDI Control Center, letting you match the sensitivity of external gear.
Clock input
This lets an outside piece of gear be the 'conductor' that sets the tempo. Plug in a clock signal here and the MicroFreak's tempo-based parts (the wobble of the LFO, the speed of arpeggios and sequences) will lock to that outside beat instead of running on their own, so everything stays in time together.
tip: For the MicroFreak to actually follow the incoming clock, set the sync source to 'Clock' in Utility (Sync > Source), and make sure the PPQ setting matches what the sending device outputs. Use a TRS cable if you also want the external gear to start and stop the MicroFreak, not just set the speed.

The Arturia MicroFreak is a compact, semi-modular synthesizer built around a single but very versatile digital oscillator paired with a real analog filter. The oscillator isn't just one sound engine — it can morph between twelve different synthesis models, from basic square and sawtooth waves to superwaves, wavetables, FM, granular textures, spoken vowels, plucked strings, chords, and physical-modeling resonators (several licensed from Mutable Instruments' Plaits module). That range means one small box can sound like almost anything, from warm analog leads to alien textures. It is paraphonic, meaning it can play up to four notes at once that all share the same filter.
What makes the MicroFreak feel special in the hand is its flat, touch-sensitive keyboard (25 keys that respond to how much finger surface you press down, sensing either pressure or velocity) and its modulation Matrix — a small grid of patch points that lets you wire modulation sources (the LFO, envelopes, keyboard, and more) to destinations (pitch, filter, oscillator parameters) without any cables. It also has an arpeggiator, two paraphonic sequencers with modulation-recording tracks, and a touch strip for pitch-bending and randomizing (Spice & Dice).
Everything on the MicroFreak is digitally controlled, even the analog filter, so presets and knob settings can be saved and recalled — 256 memory slots in all, the first 128 filled with factory sounds. It's designed as a hands-on performance and sound-design instrument: small enough to carry anywhere (it can even run off a phone power bank), but deep enough that you'll keep discovering new tricks.
First session: get a sound out of it
- 01Plug the included Arturia power supply into the DC IN on the rear panel (the three-pin wall plug matters — it grounds the touch keyboard so it works properly). Connect the Line output (the 6.35mm/quarter-inch jack) to your mixer or amp, or plug headphones into the 3.5mm headphone jack.
- 02Flip the rear Power switch on. Wait for the OLED display to light up.
- 03Turn the Master Volume knob (top right) up to a comfortable level.
- 04Turn the Preset encoder next to the display to browse the factory sounds. Make sure the Panel button is OFF so you hear each preset as it was saved.
- 05Play the touch keyboard. Since the keys are flat and touch-sensitive, press firmly with a bit of finger surface to trigger notes — try rolling more finger onto the key to feel the pressure response.
- 06To start tweaking, turn the oscillator Type knob to try different sound engines, then adjust Wave, Timbre, and Shape while watching the display. Sweep the filter Cutoff and Resonance knobs to change the tone.
- 07Shape how notes start and stop with the Envelope knobs (Attack, Decay/Release, Sustain, Filter Amt) — and press the Amp Mod button so the envelope controls volume, giving you softer fade-ins and outs.
- 08When you like a sound, press Save to store it — ideally to one of the empty slots numbered 129–256 so you don't overwrite the factory presets.
How the sound flows
Sound starts at the Digital Oscillator, the single sound source at the heart of the instrument. You pick one of twelve oscillator models with the Type knob, then shape it with the Wave, Timbre, and Shape knobs — what each of those does changes depending on the model, and the OLED display always tells you what you're adjusting. The oscillator's raw sound then passes into the Analog Filter, which removes or emphasizes frequencies to shape the tone. You choose Low Pass, Band Pass, or High Pass with the filter Type button, and set the Cutoff and Resonance knobs. From there the signal reaches an analog VCA (the volume-control stage) and out to the rear outputs. The main Envelope is permanently wired to two places: to the filter cutoff (its influence set by the Filter Amt knob), and — when the Amp Mod button is lit — to the VCA so the envelope shapes overall loudness. When Amp Mod is off, the keyboard gate simply turns the sound on and off. On top of this fixed path sits the Matrix: a grid where the LFO, Cycling Envelope, main Envelope, keyboard Pressure, and Key/Arp signals can be routed to pitch, wave, timbre, cutoff, and three user-assignable destinations. In paraphonic mode the envelope and VCA are duplicated internally so each of the up-to-four voices gets its own volume shaping.
Questions owners actually ask
Why do my knobs not seem to match the sound when I load a preset?+
Because the MicroFreak is digitally controlled, a physical knob position doesn't always reflect the saved setting. By default (Hook mode), you have to sweep a knob past its stored value to 'catch' it before it takes effect. Press the Panel button to instead hear the sound exactly as your current knob positions dictate — great for hands-on editing. You can also change the catch behavior to Jump or Scaled in the MIDI Control Center.
How do I keep from losing my edits when I turn the Preset encoder?+
By default, scrolling to another preset instantly discards any changes you made — with no warning. To avoid this, turn on Utility > Browsing > Click to Load. Then you can scroll through presets freely, and the new one only loads (and your edits are dropped) when you actually click the encoder. And of course, use the Save button to keep sounds you want to keep.
What is the Matrix and how do I use it?+
The Matrix is a grid of patch points that connects modulation sources (left column: Cycling Envelope, Envelope, LFO, Pressure, Key/Arp) to destinations (top row: Pitch, Wave, Timbre, Cutoff, and three assignable slots). Turn the Matrix encoder to move to an intersection, press it to enter edit mode, then turn to dial in a positive or negative modulation amount. To clear a point, select it and hold the encoder for two seconds. For the three Assign slots, hold an Assign button and turn any knob to make that knob the destination.
Does the keyboard have pitch and mod wheels?+
No — instead of wheels there's a touch strip above the keyboard. Press the Bend icon to use the strip for pitch bending; the middle is neutral and sliding left or right bends down or up. The Spice and Dice icons let you randomize the gates and triggers of a running arpeggio or sequence. There are no traditional wheels; expression also comes from the pressure-sensitive keys themselves.
Is the MicroFreak polyphonic?+
It's paraphonic, which means it can play up to four notes at once but they all share the single analog filter. Press the Paraphonic button to enable this. Unusually, each voice can have its own volume shaping thanks to internal VCA envelopes. Note that some oscillator models (like Chords and Speech) behave monophonically.
How do I sync the LFO or arpeggiator to a tempo?+
The LFO Rate knob and the Arp/Seq Rate knob both double as sync switches — press the knob to toggle sync on or off. When synced, values show as clock divisions (like 1/4, 1/8, 1/16) instead of Hz or BPM, and the unit locks to its internal clock, your DAW, or an external clock. Set the tempo source in Utility > Sync.
Can I connect the MicroFreak to a modular system or other synths?+
Yes. The rear panel has Pitch (CV), Gate, and Pressure outputs to control Eurorack modules or analog synths, plus Clock in/out and MIDI in/out (via the included 1/8-inch TRS-to-5-pin-DIN adapters). In the MIDI Control Center you can set the CV pitch format (1V/Oct, Hz/V, or 1.2V/Oct for Buchla) and the gate format to match your gear.
My keyboard isn't responding well — what's wrong?+
The touch keyboard needs your finger to complete an electrical circuit, so very dry skin can reduce response. Try lightly moistening your fingers (staying hydrated helps long-term). Also make sure you're using the grounded three-pin wall supply. You can fine-tune response in Utility > Preset > Press mode (pressure or velocity) and Amp Mode, or globally via KBD sensitivity.
